I went on to a Man City forum (Blue Moon) and f***ing hell they hate us. Like really horrible nasty stuff. Constant veiled Hillsborough refs and digs at the city.

It's bizarre. I genuinely don't have any beef with them. They beat us to a title a couple of years ago and signed one of our players. Like so what, there's no historical enmity there and I think Guardiola is sound.

So anyway I reckon it's wise not just to constantly sound off about other teams because it was genuinely cringeworthy reading that. Not because I was taking offence but because I don't think they realise how ridiculous they sound.

And yeah, I know we're all guilty of it but that was just stark as there's not any reason why us and City should hate each other unless you literally just hate everyone who's not you.

City aren't really that different from Chelsea in that they've no real history of which to speak and their traditional rivalries are more with s**** like Huddersfield and Rochdale so they have to stoke up a load of new, imagined ones.

That said, I pretty much hate everyone who isn't us to be fair. I just can't be arsed venting about most of them.

Though they can f*** off with the Hillsborough stuff, obviously.

I occasionally go read through match threads on other teams forums after we have beaten them and find it odd to see Liverpool fans posting in them DURING the matches.. Even on Redcafe..

Even if we just define history narrowly as trophies won a while back then they have do. I don't really like that definition though as it's pretty self serving and smacks of telling people they don't matter which would piss anyone off.

And yeah the Hillsborough stuff is shocking but feels like the corollary unfortunately of this weirdness.

Match Threads are horrendous. I remember when we beat Villa 6-0. There were still people getting s*** in there. We're never going to have the ball in the opposition area for 90 mins

A massive chunk of their history lies in the lower divisions - not just in that they've spent lots of time there, but in that it is still where loads of their 'honours' have been accumulated. In that sense, they historically haven't mattered to us or to any of the other historically big clubs other than Utd I suppose.

Remember this is the club who put three stars on their badge 'to give it a more continental feel', not because it actually signified any achievement.

They've always had a bit of a skewed sense of themselves in that way but I think you're dead right that the Hillsborough stuff is the corollary to them wanting desperately to have those sort of defining rivalries.

Both clubs have fine histories.

Now whether they are those same clubs is another point altogether.

They don't really though, not in the sense that us or Utd or Arsenal do. Everton and Spurs are more storied too. A good few others as well.

They'd never been rivals to many of those cubs, other than on a local level really. That definitely bugs them and to be honest just makes me even more inclined to point this out to them.

But "storied", whilst a better barometer than "history" or trophies, can be a very localised thing. Who are we to say "ah, but did you ever take 100,000 to Rome"? When they're rightly just proud of their clubs' existence, the community feel and that they once got nine into a Vauxhall Chevette for a game at Walsall.

Sure, the desperation for rivalry, and thus acceptance at the top table, is nu-fan. And sheens away my own argument above but goes back to whether they are the same club now.

I'd say City aren't. Just as I would say 'Boro and Rangers aren't for different reasons. At least Chelsea were knocking on the door of the Big Six for a few years before the money cemented it.

If they want to be our rivals then we must be worrying them on the pitch; they sure as hell didn't care much about us last year. Still, their need for stranger validation is weird.

Generally though it's just a binch of d*ckheads keen to prove how much more they know than Jurgen really/how they care far more than other fans. Hadn't ventured into one for ages until Saturday night - looks to be the same old suspects.

I don't think it's that. People are deeply emotionally connected to a live event. It's just that there's a perspective missing. If you were sat next to someone who was as neurotic as the match thread at the match you'd get pissed off.

I actually liked city - in the same way the mancs like Everton really - enemy of my enemy etc.

But no real care for other teams. Care about Spurs in the next game and whoever Chelsea play after that, because I want Chelsea to lose. Once we top, I'll want whoever is second to lose.

There are elements of both these things but for me it is more that I just can't quite get my head around posting all the time while the match is actually on. Generally I'm either there or watching out with mates I suppose, I have posted occasionally in the match thread when that hasn't been the case but dunno, just feels a bit odd. Each to their own I suppose.

It is mostly worth a visit after a match like the other night just to chuckle at the inevitable 'This is s***e/not at the races/matter of time/f***s sake reds/GET IN!!!!!'

At the match you converse with mates or even random people next to you throughout the match... Also hear people around you coming out with similar stuff said in the match thread.. It's opinions mixed with heat of the moment reactions to positives and negatives that are happening at the time..

Surely just explained to yourself why people post there?

That's not what I see in match threads.

Villa absolutely hate us and what did we ever do to them.

Sound - i hate them since wembley recently. Never came across such a gaggle of gobs***es

The only time I post in match threads is to save my Children from the profanities that would scar them if i didn't
