Political symbol or symbol of rememberance?

And how the hell can the Welsh FA stop fans in the crowd wearing these "political symbols"?

Political symbol or symbol of rememberance?

They're both. The poppy and the act of remembrance has always been political and politicised since the end of the First World War.

Therefore FIFA are involved? But if they are, should they be able to have a pop at the Welsh for allowing fans to wear Poppies? - Personally I don't see it as a political symbol but an act of remembering ALL who died in wars - with Armistice being the trigger :mischief:

If I rock up at an international wearing a "Guy Fawkes" T shirt, adopted by Occupy, do FIFA have a right to have a go at the FA for allowing me in the ground? And if so, what the hell happened to civil liberties...?

I think having a pop at the fans is a daft position from Fifa.

They're on firmer ground with banning teams from wearing it. The FA etc can chat all they want about it not being a political symbol, but they weren't bothered about wearing it on shirts/armbands at all until 2010 so something has obviously changed for them since then. It just ends up looking like they want to pick a fight with FIFA over something and they've picked the poppy because they know it's an emotive issue. Ironically by doing so they've contributed to making it a political symbol.

And whilst it's entirely reasonable to use the poppy to commemorate all who died in wars, it's roots aren't in that sentiment and I don't think the Royal British Legion share it either.

For me its personal. I wear one for me grandad who was a para in the second world war.

Fifa should f*** off trying to penalise wales if its about people in the crowd doing what they want to and feel is right

Fair enough.

its one of them.

He got wounded twice, was in arnhem and swam the river to get out, was in the ardennes and was army boxing champion at 3 weights so fairs fair like.

Nearly forgot to add that he taught me to play pool and also what a round is and never to be a mingebag.

A poppy is a fair exchange for all that i think

its individual choice, but i dont think they have any place on a football shirt, national, club side or whatever. i dont like much of what FIFA do, but theyre 100% on the money here in banning national teams from wearing it. Whether a spectator wears a poopy at the ground is no ones business but that of the individual

Imagine if Serbia started to wear a symbol for their fallen soldiers, not sure that the bosnians, Croatians...etc will see it as not political

More bullsh*t from the authorities. Stopping people from wearing poppies? Absolutely ridiculous.
