It's international week so time for a distraction.

Reina

Jones Carragher Hyypia Riise

Gerrard Alonso Hamann McManaman

Suarez Owen

with apologies to Mascherano, Fowler and Torres amongst many others.

LB is still the perennial problem position.....

Feel bad leaving out Henchoz who was a real favourite of mine.

Riise gets in as he was part of the 2005-6 defence and for his longevity otherwise Aurelio would have got the nod.

Play carragher at LB and fit Henchoz in

Put Riise in at LB and I'd go with that team too

i think weakest part of these teams is centre half.

I'd have Hyypia and carragher over any other CB partnership out there at the moment

Kind of feels like cheating a bit to have Aurelio in there given how little he actually played. Averaged about 15 games a season. Babbel too in some ways give that we really only got one season out of him. Though I wouldn't disagree that at their best they are better than anyone else we've had in those positions since we last won the League so fair enough.

I reckon Reina, Sami, Xabi, Mascherano, Gerrard and Suarez are all nailed on. Probably Carragher too though there is a case for Agger.

Babbel and Aurelio by default.

Toss up between Torres and Fowler (both had more to their game than Owen for me).

Which leaves one wide midfield/attacking spot I suppose.

Probably McManaman, with honourable mentions for Kuyt, Berger, Coutinho and (mostly for sentimental reasons) Luis Garcia. Hopefully by the end of the season we'll be talking about Mane being in with a shout.

Hamann and Henchoz unlucky to miss out, on the bench with Gary Mac, Dudek and whoever else up above gets left out.

The weakest part is nearly always left back.

Riise being our best left back in over 25 years is, well, pfffffffffffffft.

yeah, badly phrased.

riise the worst player obviously. but not convinced the position anything like as critical.

probably unfair to think of it comparatively, when it spans such a long time with players of different eras, but i think if you were to list candidates for centre half who've played for our rivals over same period, it begins to look a bit more like the area through spine of team that we're shortest in terms of quality/flexibility.

Back four would be Babbel hyppia agger carra. No doubts about Reina. Alonso Gerrard masc are a world away too. You'd think Suarez Torres and fowler are pretty deadly but no real width so who do you sacrifice for mcmanaman?

probably true, but also think teams talking more risks now. more managers, our own amongst them, playing more open. the more nuanced question would be if klopp had these players available to him, who and how would he use them differently, if at all.

then again, leicester just won league playing not dissimilarly to a houllier side.
