Gunga Din Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 starts tonight. i really enjoy this tournament. USA hosts this year and extended the comp to 16 teams. anyone going to be sitting up in the small hours watching?
Gunga Din Posted June 3, 2016 Author Posted June 3, 2016 Are Phil and bob there? Or indeed anyone else? phil is. bob isn't.
Cheesecake Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 Mexico v Uruguay on Monday would be worth a watch, not going to bother with tonights or the other weekend matches. no doubt the weekend games will all now be 9 goal thrillers followed a bore all draw on Monday....
Hassony Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 Suarez is injured though Might watch the Brazil game tomorrow
Benitez Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 (edited) I'll watch some game for sure. Probably wouldn't be if I had to stay up till the small hours for them to start like! Waiting till 9.30 for the first game tonight is bad enough Not actually taken the least bit of notice of this competition before. Still, its competitive footy in the summer, so all good. Cheesecake Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 balls, didn't know Suarez was injured - is he out for the duration? I read elsewhere that Neymar is out completely.
Nebraska Red Posted June 5, 2016 Posted June 5, 2016 Coutinho played the whole 90 and did well. Brazil had a new team out for the most part and again struggled to create decent chances.
Nebraska Red Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 The Mexican fans were warned prior to the game about chanting gay slurs at the goalie, which they ignored. FIFA have threatened fines and matches played behind closed doors. Uruguay are not half the team without Suarez. They did get screwed over by the refs though in a 3-1 loss.
Benitez Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 at least the game last night was pretty entertaining. The other matches I watched in the tournament so far (granted, only like 2 and a half games) where utterly dire.
Nebraska Red Posted June 8, 2016 Posted June 8, 2016 Coutinho just scored a cracker to give Brazil a 1-0 lead.
PhilM Posted June 10, 2016 Posted June 10, 2016 balls, didn't know Suarez was injured - is he out for the duration? I read elsewhere that Neymar is out completely. Isn't Neymar out because he's playing for Brazil in the Olympics instead?
Nebraska Red Posted June 11, 2016 Posted June 11, 2016 This Messi lad looks like he could be a decent player. 30 minute hat trick last night.
EC_Red Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 (edited) Brazil knocked out. To the most obvious of hand ball goals that the referee and his assistants missed. Edited June 13, 2016 by EC_Red
Nebraska Red Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 Hard to believe that none of the officials saw that blatant handball. The decision not to use the "behind the goal guys" is now in question. Of course the goal scorer came out and said it his thigh and went in. Because it was Brazil that suffered, the call for video replay in the penalty box will be louder in the coming weeks. To be fair, Brazil were bloody awful, but to go home on a deliberate handball is a joke.
yellow jumper Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 you're seeing more and more in international football the link between a national standard and investment in coaching and success in that arena. it's where the real gap exists for brazil now.

Although all things considered, probably a good thing he wasn't part of it.
Nebraska Red Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 USA through to the semis after beating Ecuador in a game that saw 2 red cards, one for A Valencia, and a bunch of yellows that sees 3 USA players out of the semi final where they will most likely face Argentina. USA team actually played some decent footy against an Ecuador team who were always ready for a scrap.
Benitez Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Apart from the Colombia game, USA have played pretty well, deservedly through to the semi finals. i don't get the stick Jürgen Klinsmann has had over the last year or two. He seems do a very good job, admittedly I'm not keeping that close an eye, but it's not like he's got a whole lot of quality players there to work with. Although that John Brooks who plays in central defense for them (and Hertha Berlin), has looked good in this tournament.
BDB Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Went to the game last night. Crowd was good - 47K they announced, more than at the Argentina - Bolivia game on Tuesday. Brooks played very well. US Defended pretty good, Ecuador really seemed to only start trying to attack in the 2nd half. Jones got sent off for putting his hands on an opponents face. New rule they are using - straight red
