Thoughts?

1. Firstly, Lucas' win is a shock as it is generally perceived that Firmino, Coutinho or Can were better performers but they were patchy. Mr Consistent has nicked the title.

2. The top 10 places were separated by only 13 points. I think this suggests that now Suarez and Sterling have left, we can hope that all-round team performances may be the norm. Certainly under Klopp we can expect better and more consistent performances...fewer standout players, like Luis.
.
3. Signings from the Rodgers/committee era - Firmino, Lallana and Can have all done well.
.
4. The much maligned keeper didn't have as bad a season as we think. 20 clean sheets, but certainly at fault on occasion. I do feel though that he will drop to the bench or leave.

5. Coutinho was average. So was Hendo, but perhaps the injury was the cause of that. Joe Allen was much better this year.

6. Defenders: Sakho and Lovren were the best two. However, look at the table and see how consistent Clyne has been - 7 2nd places and 7 3rd places. without winning a MOM award he showed a good level for us; sadly not matched by Moreno (who did win a MOM award!)

7. Kids: Ings will be like a new signing, as will Gomez. I am excited by Ojo, Stewart and Brannagan. Ward is also one to watch for 2018.

At this time, I don't know whether I will continue with this another season or not. I say to my wife each year that this will be my last but I carry on.
I am feeling that this may at last be the case though. If so, thanks for participating and hope you have enjoyed it.

Farcical that the WBA game has won this for Lucas.

 

Playing the second string for league games as we put all our eggs in the EL basket has fecked this up.

 

Firmino's been robbed, imo.

If I'd have been told a player had won it for being steady I'd have thought Clyne not Lucas. Our Lucas is very popular and rightly so, but he wasn't player of the season.

 

I hope Barnesy tells him about it though he'll be made up!

 

I think how close the voting is demonstrates that we have lots of 'good' players and no world class ones.

As for Lucas I honestly thought I'd clicked into a very old thread. Not sure about that at all.

No real stand out players this year so the ones who played the most populate an evenly spread 1-11.

Lucas should have been nowhere near winning. How odd.

 

Firmino or Milner deserved to win, although the table reflects a poor season in the league really, and no one was outstanding

It tells a story that those we perceive to be our best players haven't delivered anything near consistently enough.

I was incredulous that no-one had managed to clearly overtake Lucas despite him being out of the team for so long.

Reckon that what played out here is that the games in which Lucas played there was context to his being there and he had good games under that spotlight that led to a lot of plaudits. So, when he put in a shift at centre back and played well it became a MOTM performance rather than a solid CB performance. When he played with lesser teammates he was often the standout player. 

 

Lucas winning this is in keeping with how weird this season has been. He is quality and has had moments when he really did shine, but not consistently quality enough to actually get us over the line in any of our goals for the season.

And my top 3 would be Can/Lovren then PC.

 

I guess as you say, the scoring system doesnt help a player like Milner for instance.

Most times that Lucas played, he played well, but he didn't play often enough to be player of the season.  He's not the player he used to be though and Can has came on in leaps and bounds.

 

If I had to pick our best five, I'd pick Milner, Clyne, Firmino, Can and Coutinho in roughly that order.

But points were allocated after every match, no? So no matter how many matches he played, lads like us across multiple websites picked mom's after those games.

 

It's not the only way of picking a player of the season, but it IS definitely a way of picking a player of the match immediately after that match has finished and is fresh in the memory.

 

So, the lad who won most mom's (or second or third) wins the 'title' overall, thus is it not deserved?
