Just reading on the BBC about that girl in Pakistan who got burned to death for rejecting a marriage proposal.

Apparently the Council Of Islamic Ideology recommended it be legal to 'lightly beat' your wife (only lightly now, let's be fair) if she rejects sex or doesn't dress properly. And all religious groups came out in protest at a new law in Punjab criminalising all forms of violence against women.

The same council is proposing making marriage age for girls nine (as long as there are visible signs of puberty!).

Great bunch of lads clearly. I'm genuinely asking this because I don't know - does Islam preach treating women in this way? I can't believe it would. Being a woman in that part of the world doesn't seem like much fun. Equality is a long way off when you can't even decide if it should be legal for one sex to kick the crap out of the other.

Is Pakistan especially hard line when it comes to this? I mean these guys are hundreds of years behind the rest of the world and it's not some little sect of hardliners, this is full on nationwide laws and attitudes. This council basically tell the government what the laws should be.
