Case Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 (edited) Nearly thirty years ago, FFS. Was at this shortly after I moved to the outskirts of London (Catford). Glorious weather. Pretty sure it was pay on the gate. Desperate to go to see our new signings Barnes and Beardsley, and, my memory is really crap, but I'm fairly sure that we battered them. I can't go to the match any more, but f*** me I loved it when I could and did. Stevie Nicol. Boom. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HVfZDfcPsl4 '....Barnes and Beardsley were inevitably the main attractions. Williams threatened immediately to spoil the party, as is his distasteful custom, by assaulting Beardsley. Then McMahon, without even bothering to disguise his evil intentions behind a cloak of subtlety, sought and gained instant retribution. Both miscreants could justifiably been booked....' Report from the Times - August 15, 87. Other things I'd forgotten. Anfield was out of action for a month at the start of that season (Kop rebuild?)... And Arsenal only let 2 goals in at home once the previous season. Happy days. Edited May 7, 2016 by Case
smithdown Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 (edited) Ian Rush breaking Dixie Dean's record seemed like the biggest thing in the history of football when he scrambled it past the binman and chased it to make sure it crossed the line. It went mad. Something else I would like to bring up under any other business is Jerzy's face after the double save. The little grin he is holding back and the nod to himself. And Arsenal only let 2 goals in at home once the previous season.Happy days.Yes it was pay at the gate. My first ever league game as I was in London for the summer from Ireland. Nicol's header was beyond belief. Hung around to see the team get on the bus afterwards.Sewer under the Kop had collapsed so no home games until Oxford in Sept. Was at that too. First ever game at Anfield.
Leo No.8 Posted May 8, 2016 Posted May 8, 2016 I've got vivid memories of two away games at Sheffield Wednesday. The season Hyypia joined and it was his first league game (you could see straight away what a presence he was) and a young Michael Owen's hat trick there. I know Owen isn't the most popular here anymore and I get that, but what a striker he was as a kid.
downunder Posted May 8, 2016 Posted May 8, 2016 Coventry away, 1987-88, we all knew we had something special in that team.
kop205 Posted May 8, 2016 Posted May 8, 2016 That one in the pissing rain at Goodison in about 96 when they watered the pitch, Fowler equalised dead late on from a cross from Collymore, who then did a nice backwards celebration in front of their fans.
Redwire Posted May 8, 2016 Posted May 8, 2016 Coventry away, 1987-88, we all knew we had something special in that team.Beardsley's first goal. The Guardian had a picture a few months ago of the away end from that game and I found myself on it. We were brilliant that day and I remember the talk on the way back about how good this team could be. http://www.theguardian.com/football/ng-interactive/2015/dec/22/football-stadiums-then-and-now-interactive-quiz-part-three
libero Posted May 8, 2016 Posted May 8, 2016 Was in the Kop for the 3-3 game against the scum, it went mental when razor scored and my glasses went flying. Feck knows how but I found them again, there was blokes shouting at people to move cos I had lost them. They were a wee bit scratched but still whole.

The bloke next to me full on kissed me when Clough scored his 2nd.

I was in the home end that day, when that went in we went bezerk There was a blue in front of us crying, she was about 14 or 15, my Dad's mate was screaming in her ear. Which probably made the situation worse to be fair.

Which probably made the situation worse to be fair. Was in the Gwladys Street end for my sins. We battered them as I recall, and from behind, and low down, I was amazed at the interplay between Fowler and Collymore, the runs they were making. An earlier one... December 1980. Away to Ipswich, big family-based gang of us making a weekend of it. Centre of town a bit lairy, the casually-dressed, wedge-haired scallies standing out from the locals as clearly as if they were aliens. Weird atmosphere at the ground, too - Lennon had been shot only days before, so the DJ played all Beatles/Lennon tracks; the away end took it as an opportunity to celebrate, party and dance manically, to the further bemusement of the locals. Late team announcement - Kenny injured, s***; a promising youngster to make his debut in his place, Ian Rush. Didn't do much, but I bet Terry Butcher wished he'd taken that opportunity to break his legs given the grief he went on to give him. Ipswich were a fair team at the time, scored first - from a dubiously awarded Free Kick iirc. Our equalizer has stayed with me, though, a crisp low drive from Jimmy Case from a nice headed knock down as the aforementioned Butcher was beaten in the air when attempting a headed clearance - by, I kid you not, Sammy Lee.
Molby Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 I went there a few years latersame score...Kenny scored a blinder near the corner flagmight have been his 100th league goal actually
smithdown Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 Terry Butcher and Ian Rush. Haha! There was a night game at Anfield where Rush stole the ball from off his toe about half a dozen times, so much so that Butcher was being warned by the Kop with a big "woooooooah!" every time he had the ball at his feet so he'd panic and slice at it and just clump it. Might have finished five nil iirc. Rush was actually picking on him a bit tbh.

Also remember having to crawl between the legs of a police horse to get through to the turnstile on the Kop for that game, been queuing for ages as well. Edited May 9, 2016 by Billy Dane

autumn319 Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 That ipswich team was quite good back in those days.John wark was a good player for them.
smithdown Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 That was the specific grief I was thinking of - as noted, the shout all night was 'Give it to Butcher' - even when we had the ball!Boss. Also remember when everyone used to turn and start cheering the opposition and booing our every touch, usually European games that were getting silly. You'd even hear "koppites are gobsh*tes" from the anny road end.
Billy Dane Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 That was usually on the back of the Kop singing, "Anny Rd Anny Rd give us a song"

autumn319 Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 he was a good player for us tooThat was quite difficult back in those days to be in the starting 11 from 1984 until 1986, even for him.

scoose Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 he was a good player for us too He took the worst penalty i've ever seen for us. Against everton at goodison. He nearly hit the corner flag
