Down Memory Lane

In advance of our Premiership meeting with Watford at Anfield on Sunday, YNWA looks at our previous home League meetings. We have so far won seven and lost one of the eight matches to date.

Zico from the spot

Phil Neal converted two penalties after Ian Rush had struck our first goal as we won 3-1 in our first League encounter back in December 1982, with all our goals coming in the first half. Phil Thompson was injured in this game, being ruled out for the next two and a half months.

In September 1985, Neal again struck from the spot in a 3-1 victory, with our second coming when Craig Johnston’s shot on the turn rebounded off John McClelland’s legs to flat-foot goalkeeper Tony Coton and creep in at the post. Ian Rush rounded off the scoring as new signing Steve McMahon watched Jan Mølby giving an imperious display in midfield. Watford had taken the lead when Colin West struck the first away goal at Anfield that season following a John Barnes free-kick, in our fourth home fixture.

Rushie on target again

Ian Rush scored his final Anfield goal before his move to Juventus as we won 1-0 in May 1987, although we had to wait until the final ten minutes for the break-through. We beat the Hornets 4-3 in two years earlier, with Rush grabbing a brace, to add to a goal from Kenny Dalglish and a John Wark penalty. Jim Beglin scored an own goal in this match.

Most recently

We won 2-0 in December 2006 thanks to goals from Craig Bellamy and Xabi Alonso in a dominant display. We were beaten 1-0 by the newly promoted Hornets in August 1999, with Tommy Mooney on target. That was their highlight of a season that saw them head straight back down to the First Division.

Hefty wins

We won 4-0 in November 1987, with Steve McMahon, Ray Houghton, John Aldridge and John Barnes all on the scoresheet. We secured a 3-0 victory in February 1984, thanks to goals from Ian Rush, Steve Nicol and Ronnie Whelan.

We've had a number of chances this year to have sewn up 6th place and guarantee Europe next season.   We need to use this match as "belt and braces" just in case we lose the final.   Win this and we're only one pt behind the Hammers who surprisingly lost today.  And there will be still 2 games to go.
