The lack of on-field leadership has got me wondering whether Steven could have been kept on. I know he was often being overrun in midfield last year but Rodgers had talked about him being deployed in defence and yet he never actually went on to play him there. We've seen Lucas perform credibly as centre back this season, could Gerrard have done likewise? Or am I just being a sentimental doofus? He took a good penalty!

Don't know, don't care.

We should have been looking to the long-term replacing of Gerrard 4 years ago. We should have replaced him 2 years ago. We certainly don't need to be thinking of having kept him on once he's actually gone.

Point is, if we haven't replaced him as a field and a leader by August then we're doomed to a facsimile of this season.

And to make it worse, we thought Milner would be the answer. Yikes.

As great a player as he was, his legs have gone. I watched him in MLS last season and last week in their first game back. He'd have really struggled in The PL.

can see it both ways.

him wanting to play was the issue really. games, yes, but not sure regular starts was realistic. not sure how far he'd really gone towards accepting that.

ultimately think in a way it's better for the rebuilding process for klopp to have a squad with very few dominant figures. although i was thinking of ferguson when i wrote that and now i'm thinking of wenger.

it was the right time for him to leave from a purely footballing perspective, but his departure was very badly handled by the club and did a giant and legend a complete disservice.

And from a point of view of rebuilding midfield, the last 3 years have been nothing short of disgraceful

Agree with both points

Rodgers just didn't want any strong characters in the squad, we lost Reina, Carragher, kuyt, Gerrard and Suarez, and they were replaced with cowards

That makes it sound like he gladly got rid of them all which isn't true

Neither is the 2nd point

he got rid of some, didn't do enough to keep others

And what's Not true about the second point ?

Carragher retired. Kuyt had almost certainly agreed to leave before he even arrived. Suarez was desperate to go. Gerrard wanted to play every week. So that leaves Reina and you can make valid arguments for him leaving (like not saving shots) other than being pushed out because he was a strong character.

All of it. Not being good enough doesn't automatically make you a coward.

There's absolutely no evidence for Hass' 'strong character' theory.

A manager who got rid of Gerrard because he's afraid of strong characters doesn't sign Balotelli.
