Liverpool omit fit Daniel Sturridge from selection for West Ham in bid to avert risk of further absences

Jurgen Klopp resists temptation to select injury-blighted striker as he focuses on conditioning to reduce susceptibility to muscle strains

Daniel Sturridge will not make his Liverpool return against West Ham on Saturday as Jürgen Klopp resists the chance to use his star striker.

Liverpool will also be without captain Jordan Henderson as Klopp takes an injury hit side to East London.

Sturridge is fit again and has trained for the past two weeks, but Klopp has reiterated he is not prepared to risk further absences for the 26-year-old.

He believes strengthening his resistance to muscle problems will yield long-term results, even though it leaves him short of firepower in the short-term.

It means Christian Benteke is once more the only available centre-forward, as was the case at Sunderland in midweek.

Benteke has responded with the winning goal in the last two fixtures against Leicester and Sunderland.

Henderson’s absence is due to a recurrence of the heel pain that kept him out earlier in the season, which was aggravated in the game in the north east. Liverpool are assessing how long he will be missing as they seek a permanent remedy for another long-standing issue.

Klopp had hinted earlier this week he was tempted to use Sturridge. “Maybe Daniel could come back if we try,” he said on Thursday. Instead, with so many vital games on the horizon, the manager continues to be cautious.

Sturridge may now come into contention for the Capital One Cup semi-final with Stoke on Tuesday, or the FA Cup third-round tie at Exeter next Friday.

Liverpool are also without James Milner, Divock Origi and Martin Skrtel this weekend.

I do like Rory's idea of Ibe and Smith using pace out wide and getting the ball into Benteke, but I would be nervous of leaving just Lucas as the cover. Can has the legs to be more box to box, instead of Firmino who wouldn't necessarily work back just as much.

Whoa, I was advocating the Clyne/Ibe and Moreno/Smith attacking axis a couple of weeks back. I demand to be treated as the tactical genius I clearly am.

 

It would be a slight shock tactic to use away from home so perhaps even more likely to work. I also think Ibe deserves a start plus it'll be good rotation.

Sorry Cam, you've rumbled me Agree. They've had issues at home too. Quick breaks could be good.

 

@Red Yoda, agree that it looks light back there but having Coutinho inside Smith and Firmino inside Ibe means those players should have options inside if the wide angle is not on. The mandatory substitution of Lucas still stands.
