RIP Gerry. I wonder if the club do much to preserve the memories of people like him? An oral history archive project for the Shankly/Paisley years would be brilliant. There are fewer and fewer of them left, but I think people will still be talking about Shankly's team in 100 years or more.

Apparently it was Alzheimers. I remember when we were in the second division and we had to play at Charlton. It was the height of the Asian Flu epidemic and Liverpool tried to get the game postponed as they had half dozen players down with it. The league said No and we had to play the youngsters. Gerry Byrne was one of them - think it was his first game - and I remember Gerry did something that centre half Laurie Hughes took exception to and he didn't half bawl Byrne out. Believe we lost 5-1 in the end but I know that the crowd was 35,000 at the Valley!
