Getting an architect?

Unfortunately due a recent bereavement the person who was going to line up an architect for a home remodelling project is no longer around. I have no idea how to go about find one apart from asking google, just wondered if anyone has top trumps on this topic and can tell me how to find/judge/select a good one.. Have no word of mouth options now..
