It doesn't matter what we bring in. £49m for Sterling. So what, might as well have been nil. You don't sell your best player. It destabilises everything you are trying to do. And if you absolutely have to, you line up quality replacement(s) beforehand.

Presumably, a year ago Sterling was central to BR's thoughts. Young player, quick, skilful, creates, scores. You practically build a team around him.

 

We didn't bother getting him to sign a new contract last summer.

 

Now this summer he's gone.

 

So, you ask - how destabilising is that? How are we managing this club? What kind of short medium and long term plans are there? Are we going to hope Ibe, on the back of 60 good minutes as a wing back at Everton will just replace Sterling?

 

Or are we going to rip up what we've been doing for the past 2-3 years and start again?

Is Coutinho going to go next summer to be replaced by Andros Townsend?

It's impossible to fairly guage what the current squad could be while they remain shackled to a manager that can't motivate, is tactically bereft and weirdly intent on not playing players in their most effective positions. There is quality here but it is leaked away by the quality of management.
