This transfer window has put into sharp focus that the loan system is now patently unfair and needs to be changed completely. I read somewhere that Chelsea now have 34 players out on loan which is absolutely ridiculous. And of course they arent alone, we do it where possible too, as do many big clubs. What needs to be done to fix this?

Heres some options to consider:

1. Some of you gents have advocated the possibility of a cap on the number of players you can have on loan at one time. This would be a good start. How many loans should be acceptable?

2. No loans to clubs in the same division. It used to be like this wasnt it? Why was it changed? This gets rid of people like Victor Moses spending what will almost inevitably be 6 seasons on loan at various clubs in the prem. Dont think he would have signed a new 4 year deal if it meant playing championship footy for that time.

3. Players signed by a club cannot go on loan for 3 seasons. This would kill the stockpiling completely i'd say but is it realistically doable?

Thoughts?

4 Rebrand it. Instead of being permitted to use the word "loan" instead the word "fanny" or "ponce" must be used, so any manager if asked has to say that he is looking to ponce someone out to the Turkish league while fannyng about with someone else's deadbeat flop

Set a maximum age on players who can be loaned, say 21. That would make it about giving the players experience, rather than about plonking them somewhere to collect loan fees and hope that their value goes up. To be fair though, that only rules out 10 of Chelsea's loaned out players.

I think that's a good start

platyers who go on loan for two seasons in a row must contain a buy option below value.

Clubs should have a first team roster of 30 players, 25 to be registered.

Players cannot be loaned out for first 13 months after signed.

What are people's main issues with the loan system?

maybe the loans will be less if they start allowing the big teams to have B teams in the championship/ League 1

Why are Chelsea doing this? I'm sure there's a financial angle but I'm not sure I get it. Is it just speculation that the players value will increase while someone else pays the wages? Add in loan fees and they can make a nice profit overall?

And is it paying off for them (or us?)

Chelsea want to buy (say) 30 players relatively cheaply. They can sell 15 for a profit & if one turns into a superstar it's all worth it.

It's basically throwing a load of s*** at a wall (almost literally in their case) and hoping some of it sticks

They're making a tidy profit off it at the moment yeah. They lose a bit of cash here and there but they're getting most of these lads loans at decent clubs in big leagues so they're maintaining or increasing their value. I'm also wondering if there's some sort of player amortisation weird accounting going on? Maybe someone else with accounting knowledge can answer that.

The amortisation aspect makes short term speculation worthwhile. If we're going down the property angle, it's a little like buying off plan in a booming market. They never expect to pay the full price in accounting terms, and as Macca says, they, and us to a lesser extent, are throwing s*** at a wall.

I was thinking on the way into work this morning that it's surprising that an options market hasn't built up based on the trading of footballers ... but thinking on about it, that is actually what the loan market has become to some.

They're not options but there is a kind of crude market in some countries with lax laws. Porto, Benfica and Sporting all have third party companies that lend them money to buy players for percentages of their sell-off fees. The Sporting one is based in Ireland for tax reasons. I think they've forced clubs to sell players on at times too.

But isn't the loan market heading the way of being an options market for some clubs?

The buyer pays a premium (a low fee) that gives them the option to acquire an asset (a player) should they turn into something valuable (a good, in-demand player). It doesn't quite work, but it's on the way.

True, that does seem to be the way Chelsea are operating

The U21 / reserve league needs a reboot. Young players should be competing with and against older players whilst they're developing. Conversations with experienced senior players must be less common now than they were 20 years ago.

They might be, but were things better 20 years ago?

Going back a bit further. We only had one sub, with 5 (named) in Europe, plus a reserves league. Squads were smaller, and less players used over a season. One year we used 14 (I think) players all year. This meant less players actually broke through and were given a chance at a top club. Our reserves captain Brian Kettle won the central league many times but only played about two games for the first team over about ten years. i often say things are better but maybe they weren't as it was harder to break into the first team.

I would like a real reserves league with no age restrictions to be reintroduced though.

B teams in the lower leagues is the best way IMO, good way to give the our ex players a chance in management as well
