How the feck are Tottenham in Pot 1 and we are in Pot 2?

Liverpool FC relegated to pot two for Europa League draw as coefficient drops

Recent poor record in Europe will ensure a tricky group for Reds

Liverpool will have to settle for a place in the second pot for Friday’s Europa League group stage draw in Monaco.

The Reds’ UEFA coefficient, which is calculated based on their results in Europe over the past five years, has dropped to 47.078.

That puts them outside the top dozen clubs to qualify for Europe’s second-tier competition with the final line-up for the group stage to be confirmed once Thursday night’s play-off round second leg matches have been completed.

As a result, Liverpool could find themselves in the same group as the likes of Schalke, Basel, Napoli, Marseille, Villarreal or Fiorentina. Tottenham are also in the first pot but the Reds can’t be drawn against another English club.

Brendan Rodgers’ side tumbled out of the Champions League at the group stage last season and were then knocked out in the last 32 of the Europa League by Besiktas.

In the 2013-14 campaign the Reds didn’t even qualify for Europe and in Rodgers’ first year at the helm they lost to Zenit St Petersburg in the last 32 of the Europa League.

Liverpool didn’t make Europe in 2011-12 and the season before that they were knocked out in the last 16 of the Europa League by Braga,

It’s a far cry from 2009 when the Reds were the top-ranked club in Europe with a coefficient score of 114.077.

The draw for the Europa League group stage will take place in Monaco at noon UK time on Friday.

I guess it's our dismal showing last year along with the year we were absent. It seems strange alright, but as the article says, it's based solely on european form.

It's the Europa - who cares?

Agreed. Play the 2nd team/youngsters in all games before Xmas home and away. I would rest the first teamers completely unless they need games to get back into the groove.

If we get through, then great. If we don't, then no big loss.

Something like

Bogdan

RB? (Until Flanno's back we're very light on cover here)

Illori

Sakho

Moreno

Lucas

Allen

Rossiter

Ibe

Ings (Maybe Sturridge for fitness purposes)

Origi

Mignolet

Toure

Gomez

Can

Lallana

Markovic

Benteke

Not too shabby and involves very few of the starting XI

hate this attitude

Rodgers has been pretty much useless in europe, he can't afford to have another crap european campaign (plus he really needs a trophy), and if we are to qualify to the CL next season, then he and the players need all the experience they can get

we have a big squad, and t should be utilised properly

Should be looked upon as a very good chance of gaining CL qualification. Seville certainly care.

I doubt they gave a schit which pot they were in relative to Spurs

Used to love the UEFA cup in it's old form, back when we won it and before it changed.

Now Champions league qualifier failures get in. Then the 3rd place failures from the group stages get thrown into it.

As much as I care about trophies in the cabinet, our best chance and priorty should be making sure we finish 3rd or 4th in the league.

Then there's the aspect of the games messing up your domestic league. Look how any English teams league form has suffered badly because of UEFA cup games over the past 5 years in the games before Xmas.

I think our back up and youngsters are good enough to get us through in any case and an excellent opportunity for them to get some much needed game time, especially our fringe squad players that haven't had a look in so far.

Lucas and Can in midfield behind Ibe, Markovic, Ings and Origi. Use players who'll be on the bench at the weekend, get them into form.

Wouldn't mind seeing Sakho alongside Ilori in defence.

That's an exciting team

we're good enough to win this

Markovic is suspended for the first game I think

I know it is the coefficient but haven't Tottenham been useless in Europe?

They had one good season 5 years ago which is why they're ahead. Think it was when Bale scored the hat trick vs Inter. We've done f*** all in that time.

That was happening when we last won it too.

It is the group stage that kills it now. Anzhi, Young Boys and Udinese last time for us. Deeply uninspiring. The only game I can remember anything of is the away match to Young Boys, even though I must have been at the home games.

Exactly, the aim is to qualify for the CL. We need a manager and a squad that can deal with playing in the CL and maintaining a league position to qualify. Although just having to say that takes me sad at how far we've dropped and how low our expectations have fallen.

Not as useless as us - a tired-eye glance at the book of wiki:

Spurs

11/12 - Group stage EL

12/13 - QF EL

13/14 - Last 16 EL

14/15 - Last 32 EL

Us

11/12 - Didn't qualify

12/13 - Last 32 EL

13/14 - Didn't qualify

14/15 - Group stage CL
