Passport renewal

So I'm currently waiting for my passport to be renewed. I'm based on Hong Kong and travel a hell of a lot with work and have had to renew my passport as I've run out of pages. The minimum time it takes to get a passport renewed from abroad is apparently 6 weeks. I sent mine over 6 weeks ago, and haven't got it back yet. I fly back to the UK for a family event next Friday and the status still says it's being processed. Strangely, I've already received my old passport back, along with the supporting documentation I sent over.

 

Bricking it slightly. Has this happened to anybody here? I guess perhaps I can get an emergency travel document - but that'll involve more dough down the drain.

 

A shambles that it takes at least 6 weeks, and no maximum time is set at all. The amount I travel with work, I can't just block off whole months to stay in HK. F*cking ludicrous.

 

Due to public sector cuts?
