I have absolutely no rationale to think so, but for some reason I'm always skeptical towards left footed players taking a penalty. I've tried to understand why I think so, but there's just not one thing I can put my finger on. It's like I think they're easier to read for the goalie or something. Anyway, I'm rambling...

Anybody else having the same feeling, or do I walk alone? ;)

You never hear anybody say "wand of a right foot"

Maybe it's just because you don't see many left footers. When a team does have a decent left footer, they often take penalties. A lot of left backs have been penalty takers, but not right backs.

It's one of the oldest memes in football. Sorry to break it to you Beardsley lad.

He, he. Didn't know that. For one thing it proves I'm not the only one thinking it.

I think Andreas Brehme tool penalties with either foot...

I'm pretty sure I remember being surprised in 1990 when he took the pen in the World Cup final with his right.

My dad insists the opposite is true. That left-footed penalty takers are much better.

He hasn't provided any stats to back this up.

There is a school of thought amongst many pundits that left-footed penalty takers are more predictable. Never saw any stats to back that assertion.

was it the ian harte (leeds united and eire) would threaten to take the pen with his left and dispatch it with his right (or vice versa)?

- no calvinist that one, obviously

shankly, they say, was prejudiced against left-footed goalkeepers...

i'm sure He wouldn't of had one of them taking a penalty - even if it was sudden death at 13-13 in the second leg of a protracted fairs cup tie after extra time and numerous indecisive tosses of the coin
