BG Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 I couldn't see a thread on this and think it should have one. RIP the 39 who lost their lives 30 years ago tomorrow. http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/may/27/heysel-stadium-disaster-30th-anniversary http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/may/27/heysel-stadium-disaster-30th-anniversary
kop205 Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Dreadful day, remember it well, was 7, watching on telly on our first overseas family holiday, none of us able to believe what was happening.
jimbolala Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Still can't believe they played the match. It was crazy to watch on the telly and even as a kid I knew they shouldn't play after that
Mike Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Seems as good a place as any: The Anfield Wrap has just published nine articles and released a podcast on Heysel, a different type of podcast. We aren't pushing it aggresively as we would our usual stuff. Obviously not about all that. What we want is for it to sit on the website for people to refer back to. We're happy with the work though and hope you get the chance to have a look. If you do, the best place to start is here: http://www.theanfieldwrap.com/2015/05/heysel-30-years-an-introduction/

Billy Talbot Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Nothing to say really. I remember it well. First time I sat down properly to watch the European Cup Final and that's what happened. RIP
RaoulD Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Will never forget what it was like there that night. Even after 30 years, the memories still remain as fresh and distressing as ever. Riposi in pace.
guernseygareth Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Remember I'd got the kick off time wrong and rushed home on my BMX and couldn't get my head round what I saw. Even as a 13 year-old I thought to play after all that was callous, game meant nothing. RIP to the 39.
Boca Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Remember I'd got the kick off time wrong and rushed home on my BMX and couldn't get my head round what I saw. Even as a 13 year-old I thought to play after all that was callous, game meant nothing. RIP to the 39. I had a similar experience. I was 10 and was forced to go to guitar lessons which meant missing the first half hour or so. Rushed to my grandmothers to watch the match only to be told kick off had been delayed. I was delighted that I hadn't missed any of it until I realised what had happened. RIP YNWA
autumn319 Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 awful memories for me.i was 11 at the time.it was a dreadful moment to see on the television these people dying in front of you.
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Think the game went ahead because they feared more aggro if it didn't. Sham of a game though, I remember watching it hollow. It didn't matter a jot http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/may/28/juventus-heysel-victims-30-years-liverpool I take exception at his use of 'triumphant' in this article though He wants Gianluigi Buffon to hoist the Champions League trophy on 6 June – still the same “big ears” design that the Juventus players triumphantly paraded around a decrepit stadium in which those people had died hours earlier Amid the grief of their loss, the families of the victims and the 600 injured saw Juventus parade the trophy after the match, which they won 1-0, and return home triumphant the following day.
Duncan Disorderly Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 I was 17, remember it all too well. I was in tears. Riposa in pace.
cymrococh Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 Excellent work by The Anfield Wrap on the articles and podcast. I thought it was very appropriately handled.
Snookie Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 RIP the 39. My thoughts go out to them, their families and friends. YMNA.
Cobs Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 remember watching it with a deep sense of shame and bewilderment. Never seen our fans be associated with any major violence before (probably a bit naïve of me) and couldn't comprehend how it had gone off like this on the biggest occasion of all. As it turned out it was 'relatively' minor hooliganism with awful and tragic consequences. RIP to the 39. Excellent work by The Anfield Wrap on the articles and podcast. I thought it was very appropriately handled. definitely.
dorgie Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 I was 17, remember it all too well. I was in tears. Riposa in pace. Same age as me. I remember putting on BBC Radio 2, must've been around 6.30pm and Emlyn Hughes & Peter Jones were on commentary duty - Emlyn was crying as he was describing it. RIP the 39
mally Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 RIP the 39. Phil Neal has been stitched up here but the comments do not make good reading. http://www.theguardian.com/football/2005/apr/03/newsstory.sport?CMP=share_btn_tw
cymrococh Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 RIP the 39. Phil Neal has been stitched up here but the comments do not make good reading. http://www.theguardian.com/football/2005/apr/03/newsstory.sport?CMP=share_btn_twBizarrely I was in his presence when he took that phonecall (it was one of those 'live the dream' tours where you had a training session at the academy and lunch with a couple of ex players), I had no idea what he was talking about but the content is accurate.
psl Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 (edited) Neal did this about Hillsborough a few years back I think. Actually looking in to it, the quotes are a little too similar... http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/phil-neal-under-fire-fans-3532797 Edited May 29, 2015 by psl
cymrococh Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 Neal did this about Hillsborough a few years back I think. This is the same piece that was run years back.
Nerik Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 Was watching it on Italian TV back here in Malta. Was 9yrs old at the time. Everyone was pretty shocked that the game went ahead and Juventus did not win any plaudits for parading the trophy afterwards.
