Does anyone have sympathy for them ?

I do, I think they have an incredibly tough job and some of the decisions they get slaughtered for are because TV camaras (and slow motion) have a better angle than he does. There are some shockers alright I admit but some things happen so fast that you cant be sure.

Reckon Michael Oliver is the best of them with Clattenberg thereafter, not sure after that.

I'd have sympathy if they didn't earn about £80k for doing something which either requires little real ability, or can be done even if you lack the required ability.

And people say it's really hard which, in a certain context, it is. But let's be honest. It's hardly 10 hours a day in a factory.

I don't have sympathy because I don't hate them. I barely know their names and which ones are good and bad. I just don't see it as an area of focus. The most boring part of the game.

Sick of them trying to act as a handicap element in the FA Cup this year. Letting alehouse challenges go because the player committing it is s***.

The issue in the Sako case is not just the refs but the now "accepted" culture that trying to get someone sent off is ok. Players and managers are hypocrites when they complain about the decisions when they then encourage the same thing from their own team.

There isn't one good ref around these days, they're all bandstanding gobs***es. The standard has dropped hugely since Mike Reed took over. No surprise really as he was f***ing terrible himself.

There's far too much creating or facilitating of narratives going on rather than just refereeing incidents. Doesn't help that commentators fall for it as well so most people talking about football are obsessed with 'fairness' and things 'evening out' etc.

The argument that refs' authority will be compromised by technology is totes ridic, surely the fact that players will know that their decisions are backed up by proof rather than subjective judgement will make them even more authoritative.

Durkin was decent

Oliver did and I don't recall much of Durkin outside of the obvious, I think my point is that refs have always been s***, or at least we generally think they are s*** and there's not much that will end this. I'm still in favour of using technology to help them but I doubt we ever get to a point where most football fans think most refs are doing a decent job.

and there will still be disputes when technology comes in, which it will eventually [we see in other sports now TMOs making decisions that leave you scratching your head]. Shame there's no proper leadership of FIFA or it would be done already. Obviously the bribes haven't been big enough yet.

Durkin was one of those refs who rarely fecked up (and when he did famously got in front of the cameras to admit his error), didn't make a big show of himself and make the game all about him.

In the old, old days you still appealed for everything, slagged him off and accused them of bias/blindness depending on the outcome of every game - but there wasn't relentless replays of every incident from multiple angles with slo-mo and all the social media, 24 hour sky sports news, talksport and everything else analysing it all to the nth degree. So when people say refs of today are worse than they've ever been they're probably wrong.

This explains a lot as he's an eastenders actor who died in 2007. 'Pat, whatavya dan to me Pat'. No way should he be in charge of refereeing. It must be him who approved Lee Mason. :)

On a serous note though yeah Riley was awful. But the reason he became head of refereeing is probably because he awarded a record number of penalties to Manchester United.

Ferguson was running everything.
