be delighted with a point right now. Can only hope Henderson, Coutinho and Sahko start. Could do with the captain back for this one too. Feck knows who starts up front. Sterling can sit on he bench though and ponder his contract.

I'd take a point.

This is why it was vital we got 3 points at Southampton.

If we hadn't won at Southampton, this would have been a must win game. Now it is not the end of the world if we do drop points.

Double Agents

Ahead of our second League encounter of the season on Sunday, YNWA remembers some of the players who have worn Manchester City’s sky blue as well as the Liverpool red.

Current double agents

Daniel Sturridge signed pro terms with Manchester City in 2006, having bagged both goals in the second leg as the reds won the FA Youth Cup earlier that year. He struck six times in 32 senior outings before moving to Chelsea for an initial £3.5m in July 2009, eventually rising to £6.5m. He arrived at Anfield for £12m in January 2013, scoring an impressive 38 times in sixty games to date.

Kolo Touré arrived from City on a free in July 2013, so far playing 39 times without scoring. He joined City from Arsenal for £16m in July 2009, helping them to claim the League title for the first time in 44 years in 2012. He struck just three times in 102 outings for City, initially as club captain. He was also banned for six months after failing a drugs test having taken his wife’s water tablets. Mario Balotelli signed from AC Milan for £16m last August, so far netting four goals in 23 outings. He had joined City from Internazionale for €21.8m in August 2010, scoring thirty times in eighty games before joining AC Milan for an initial £19m in January 2013. He helped City to claim the FA Cup in 2011 and the League title the following year.

Liverpool-born forward Mike Sheron joined Norwich City from Manchester City for £1m in August 1994 after bagging 29 goals in 120 games for his first club. He is now coaching the Under-13’s at the Academy. Barry Hunter joined the reds as Chief Scout in September 2012, having been in the same role at City since January 2009. Dave Fallows arrived from City as Head of Scouting at the same time. Academy Chief Scout Dave Moss spent two years in the mid-1990’s coaching with City.

Recent striking stars

Robbie Fowler scored 171 goals in 330 reds appearances in his first spell at Anfield. The ‘Toxteth terror’ won UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two League Cup winners’ medals before being sold to Leeds United for a reported £11m in November 2001. He signed for Manchester City for £6m in January 2003, and struck 27 times in 92 games before returning to his spiritual home in January 2006. He netted twelve times in 39 appearances in this second spell, but was released at the end of his second season, signing on with Cardiff City in July 2007. Nicolas Anelka struck 46 times in 104 games for City after signing from Paris Saint-Germain for £13m in June 2002, before moving to Fenerbahçe SK in January 2005 for £7m. He had bagged five goals in 22 reds games while on loan during 2001/02.

Craig Bellamy arrived from Blackburn Rovers for £6m in June 2006. His first stay in L4 was only a partial success, as he grabbed nine goals in 42 games, with his finest moment coming in the Camp Nou as he scored a crucial goal in our 2-1 victory to help us progress towards Athens. He was sold to West Ham United for £7.5m in July 2007, the record fee paid by the Irons. However, he moved to Eastlands for a reported £14m in January 2009, scoring against Newcastle United on his debut, another of his former clubs. He made 51 appearances for City, notching fifteen times, returning to Anfield on a free transfer in August 2011. He netted another nine times in 37 outings back in red before returning to his hometown club Cardiff City on another free transfer a year later.

Stars of the 1980’s

Steve McMahon was Kenny Dalglish’s first signing when he arrived from Aston Villa for £375,000 in September 1985. He bossed the reds midfield in 277 games, grabbing fifty goals and winning three League titles, FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields before being sold to Manchester City by Graeme Souness for £900,000 in December 1991, for whom he struck just once in 99 outings. Striker David Johnson signed from Ipswich Town for a club record £200,000 in August 1976 and scored 78 goals in his 213 reds games, winning three League titles, European Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields before moving to Maine Road via his second spell at Goodison. He bagged one goal in six League games for City in 1983/84.

Peter Beardsley spent six games with City on loan from Bolton Wanderers in early 1998 as they were relegated from the First Division, although he did play in three wins. He had bagged 59 goals in 175 reds games after signing from Newcastle United for a British record £1.9m fee in July 1987, helping us to claim two League titles, an FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields. Paul Walsh joined Manchester City from Portsmouth for £750,000 in March 1994. He netted nineteen times in 62 games in his eighteen months at Maine Road. He had struck 37 times in 112 reds games after signing from Luton Town for £700,000 in May 1984, winning a League title and the Screen Sport Super Cup before joining Tottenham Hotspur for £500,000 in February 1988.

Michael Robinson struck eight goals in thirty League games for City during 1979/80 before joining Brighton & Hove Albion. Joe Fagan then brought him to Anfield in August 1983 for £250,000. He won League title and European Cup medals in his first season, grabbing a total of thirteen goals in 52 games during his Anfield career. He moved to Queens Park Rangers for £100,000 in December 1984.

Legendary managers

Sir Matt Busby, later to become an Old Trafford legend, joined the reds for £8,000 from Manchester City in March 1936, making 125 appearances for us, many as skipper. He had played more than two hundred games for City, including two FA Cup Finals. Another legendary manager to appear for City was Joe Fagan, who was in the Anfield hot-seat for two seasons, in the first of which he led the mighty reds to a unique treble of League, League Cup and European Cup. Uncle Joe started his playing career with City, for whom he played 168 times, captaining them in the last three of these.

Phil Neal, Bob Paisley’s first signing for £66,000 from Northampton Town, who won four European Cups amongst many honours while at Anfield, was in charge at City for just ten games, winning only two, having taken over from Steve Coppell who had occupied the role for an even shorter period! David Ashworth led us to our third League title in 1922, and later briefly managed City without any notable success. Kevin Keegan resigned as City boss in March 2005 after four years in charge during which time he led them to the First Division title and top-flight safety. He had netted exactly a century of goals in 323 reds games, helping to fire us to the European Cup, three League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields.

More recent double agents

Left-winger Albert Riera joined the reds from R.C.D. Espanyol for an initial £5.5m fee on transfer deadline day in September 2008, and made 56 appearances, netting five times before joining Olympiacos for an initial £3.3m in July 2010. He had spent time on loan with City from the Barcelona-based club in 2006, notching once in 21 games while at Eastlands. David James arrived at Anfield from Watford for a fee of £1m in July 1992. He made 277 appearances in his seven years at Anfield, helping us to claim the League Cup in 1995 before being sold to Aston Villa for £1.7m in June 1999. He moved to Manchester City from West Ham United for £2m in January 2004, playing exactly one hundred times before joining Portsmouth for £1.2m in August 2006.

Dietmar Hamann made a total of 283 appearances for the reds, helping us to claim the Champions League, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, two League Cups and the FA Charity Shield after signing from Newcastle United for £8m in July 1999. Three of his eleven goals had come against City. He moved on to both Bolton Wanderers and Manchester City in a bizarre transfer saga in the summer of 2006 to bring his Anfield career to a close. He played 71 times for City, only featuring on the scoresheet once, before being released in the summer of 2009.

Steve McManaman spent the last two seasons of his career with City after four years at Real Madrid, failing to score in 44 games, in contrast to his time at Anfield when he struck 66 times in 364 games, as we won the FA Cup in 1992 and the Coca-Cola Cup three years later. July 1992 saw Manchester-born Paul Stewart move to Anfield from Tottenham Hotspur for £2.3m. He spent four years at White Hart Lane after moving there from Manchester City, for whom he had struck thirty times in 63 games. He was one of Graeme Souness’s failed buys, making 42 uninspiring appearances before leaving for free after four seasons at Anfield.

In January 1996 Nigel Clough moved to Maine Road for £1.5m after three seasons, nine goals and 44 games in a red jersey, having signed from Nottingham Forest for £2.275m in June 1993. He bagged five goals in 44 games for City. Irish winger Mark Kennedy joined the reds from Millwall for £1.5m in March 1995, failing to score in 21 games before moving to Wimbledon for £1.75m three years later. He then moved on to City for £1m in July 1999, netting eleven times in 77 games whilst at Maine Road, before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers for £2m in July 2001. Bootle-born Mark Seagraves made the switch from Anfield to Maine Road for £100,000 in September 1987 after only two appearances in a red shirt. He played fifty times for City before moving to Bolton Wanderers for the same fee three years later. Richard Money left Liverpool after only seventeen outings. He had a stint as coach at Manchester City after injury ended his playing career.

Other double agents

1930’s forward Tosh Johnson signed from Everton in March 1934, bagging eight goals in 38 reds games. He had started his professional career with City, netting 38 League goals in season 1928/29, still a club record before moving to Everton for £6,000 in March 1930. He scored a club record total of 158 goals in 328 League games for City. Bill Kinghorn struck four times in nineteen games in our forward line during the last full season before the outbreak of the Second World War. He then guested for City during the war. Inside-right Jimmy Ross won two League titles with the ‘invincible’ Preston North End before joining the reds for a club record £75 in 1894. He netted 39 times in 85 reds games, helping us to claim the Second Division title and skippering the side, moving on to Burnley in March 1897. He died of an acute skin disease in June 1902, while a City player, having helped them to the Second Division title.

Outside-left Alf Hanson signed from Everton in November 1931, bagging 52 goals in 177 games before we received a club record £7,500 fee from Chelsea in June 1938, later guesting with City as well as the reds. Scottish international inside-right George Livingstone signed from Celtic in May 1902, scoring four times in 32 games, including one on his debut against Blackburn Rovers, before moving to Maine Road in May 1903, creating the winning goal for Billy Meredith in the 1904 FA Cup Final for them. Utility man Tom Chorlton netted eight times in 121 reds games before joining Manchester United in 1912. He later became a Trainer at Maine Road. Other double agents include keeper Augustus Beeby, who signed from amateur side Osmaston in December 1908, moving on to City in May 1911 after sixteen reds games. Forward Pat Finnerhan signed from Ardwick in March 1897, as City were then known. He netted once in eight outings before moving to Bristol City the following year.

Alan Harper never made our first-team, enjoying more success across Stanley Park. He joined City in December 1989 from Sheffield Wednesday for £150,000, scoring twice in 62 games for them before returning to Goodison in August 1991. Former goalkeeping coach Joe Corrigan spent over twelve years with City, most of them as their first choice keeper, as he made 592 appearances to rank at number two in their list of games played, including 28 games against the reds, more than any other player for City. He helped them to claim the FA Cup, European Cup Winners’ Cup and two League Cups. Centre-forward Fred Howe joined on a free transfer from Hyde United in March 1935, netting 36 times in 94 outings before joining Manchester City in June 1938, netting five times in six League games before joining Grimsby Town later that year. He bagged three reds trebles, including notching four times in our record 6-0 derby victory at Anfield in September 1935.

Centre-half James McBride struck seven times in 56 games, helping us to the Second Division title in 1894 after signing from Renton in June 1892. He moved on to Ardwick in December 1894, as City were then known. Forward Harry Race joined the reds from Raby United in October 1927, netting eighteen goals in 43 outings before joining City for £3,000 in August 1930. However, he struck three times in just eleven games for City before signing for Nottingham Forest in June 1933. Full-back William Jenkinson signed from South Liverpool in 1916 but only played thirteen times before moving to Wigan Borough in June 1921. He had been with City before joining South Liverpool.

That's the spirit.

I know, I'm such a t***. Might give my ticket to someone else.

Anyway, I'd start Allen and Hendo in midfield. Allen was excellent first half. Give him 60 minutes from the start on Sunday.

Down Memory Lane

YNWA looks back at past memorable home League encounters as we welcome Manchester City for their 79th visit in the League this Sunday, including once when they were known as Ardwick. Our record so far reads 47 wins, eighteen draws and thirteen defeats.

Most recently

We won 3-2 last April, our tenth straight League win, with Raheem Sterling and Martin Škrtel putting us two goals ahead inside the first half hour. However, the visitors drew level through David Silva and a Glen Johnson own goal after the break before Philippe Coutinho pounced on a Vincent Kompany error to secure the victory and our place at the top of the table. This was our 93rd League goal of the season, a new club record in the top flight. Unfortunately, Jordan Henderson was sent off late on.

We drew 2-2 in August 2012, when Lucas had to go off early with a thigh injury. Martin Škrtel opened the scoring with a header, with Yaya Touré equalising for the reigning champions before a Luis Suárez free-kick put us back in front. However, Carlos Tévez capitalised on a slack Škrtel back-pass to hand the visitors a share of the spoils, the most recent of his four goals past us to date. Andy Carroll made his 58th and last reds appearance, from off the bench.

We were also held to a draw in November 2011. Vincent Kompany headed the visitors in front from a corner before we equalised when a Charlie Adam strike deflected off Joleon Lescott for an own goal. Substitute Mario Balotelli was sent off late on after two quick-fire bookings.

We won 3-0 seven months earlier, with Andy Carroll bagging his first two reds goals and Jon Flanagan making an impressive debut. Dirk Kuyt also struck, with all the goals coming before the break. Our two meetings in L4 before that both ended all square. Martin Škrtel opened the scoring in November 2009 after the break with his first reds goal, with substitute Yossi Benayoun grabbing an equaliser after we had fallen 2-1 down, before himself being replaced. Emmanuel Adebayor bagged one of his five goals against the reds to date, with Stephen Ireland also on target. Nine months earlier, Dirk Kuyt bagged the equaliser after ex-red Craig Bellamy’s strike took a wicked deflection off Álvaro Arbeloa for an own goal.

Fernando again

Fernando Torres scored in his eighth consecutive home League game in May 2008, equalling Roger Hunt’s club record as we won 1-0. This was his 32nd goal of the season.

King Kenny’s trebles

In May 1978, Kenny Dalglish scored a treble as we won 4-0, with Phil Neal bagging the other from the penalty spot. Kenny repeated the feat in December 1982, with Neal again and Ian Rush on target in our 5-2 win. These were his only League hat-tricks for the reds, and his only Anfield ones.

Also recently

Nine months earlier, Joey Barton was dismissed in February 2006 after Harry Kewell had struck the only goal. Richard Dunne was sent off late on for City as they lost 2-1 at Anfield in August 2004 in Rafael Benítez’s first Anfield game in charge, with our goals coming from Milan Baroš and Steven Gerrard. This was the first time in over five years that we had triumphed in a League game after trailing at half-time, with ex-red Nicolas Anelka having put the visitors in front just before the break with one of his five goals past us.

Michael Owen broke a nine-match goalless run six months earlier, with Steven Gerrard also netting in a 2-1 win. Steve McManaman made his first Anfield return, with David James and Robbie Fowler also playing for City. The game’s main talking point was the ridiculous booing of Gérard Houllier’s decision to bring on Igor Bišcan for Bruno Cheyrou in the last few minutes to shore up the defence.

Reds debuts

Christian Ziege made his reds bow against City in September 2000, with Erik Meijer playing his 27th and final game. Jamie Carragher was captain for the first time as Michael Owen netted his 55th goal in his hundredth League game, with Didi Hamann adding a brace as we won 3-2 as City fought back from two goals down before Hamann’s late winner. Ex-World Player of the Year George Weah scored his only League goal for City with Kevin Horlock converting a spot-kick.

In August 1962, left-back Phil Ferns made the first of his 28 reds appearances in our 4-1 win. Roger Hunt netted a brace, to add to goals from Ian St. John and Alan A’Court, while Peter Dobing scored one of his eight goals past us. Inside-left Willie Fagan netted in his hundredth League appearance for the reds as we were held to a 1-1 draw in April 1948, with centre-forward Les Shannon making his reds bow and full-back Jim Harley playing his 131st and last reds game. In March 1938, Ron Jones scored on his reds bow, with Jack Balmer also netting as we won 2-0.

In September 1934, centre-half Norman Low debuted in a 2-1 win, with Sam English and Gordon Hodgson on the scoresheet, with the latter on target in his sixth consecutive game for the reds as well as missing a penalty for the first time for the reds. Fred Tilson struck one of his six goals against the reds. Right-half David McMullan made his debut in October 1925, as Harry Chambers and Dick Forshaw struck in our 2-1 win, with left-half Tom Bromilow playing his 200th League game and Tommy Johnson grabbing the first of his eight goals past us. In January 1896, keeper Harry Storer made his reds debut in our 3-1 Second Division win, with Jimmy Ross bagging a brace to add to a Malcolm McVean goal.

Larry in 1972

Larry Lloyd grabbed his first reds goal as we won 3-0 in February, with Kevin Keegan also on target and Bobby Graham netting his 42nd goal in his 137th and final reds game. Six months later he was dismissed along with City’s Wyn Davies as we triumphed 2-0, thanks to an early Brian Hall strike and a late Ian Callaghan goal. Lloyd later became the first player to fight a ban before the newly formed independent disciplinary tribunal, in relation to this sending off. Steve Heighway reached a century of reds games that day.

Thumping victories

We thumped City 6-0 in October 1995 just three days after beating them 4-0 at Anfield in the League Cup, with strike partners Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler each grabbing a brace, and Jamie Redknapp and Neil Ruddock also on target, while Steve McManaman played his 200th reds game. City’s fans ironically chanted “Alan Ball is a football genius” as they registered their worst ever Premier League defeat. Jimmy Smith scored for the reds in the first minute, but City went on to win 6-1 back in October 1929, their biggest ever win at Anfield. Eric Brook bagged the first two of his nine strikes against the reds, with Tommy Tait scored the first two of his four goals past us and Tommy Johnson also netting twice. Outside-left Fred Hopkin made his 300th reds appearance in this game.

Reds farewells

Steve McMahon played his final hour for the reds in December 1991, before his imminent move to Maine Road, which was already public knowledge. Dean Saunders and Steve Nicol scored in a 2-2 draw, with David White netting two of his five goals past us, as he had already done in the reverse fixture that season. Ray Kennedy nabbed the only goal in May 1981 as we ended a disappointing League campaign in fifth place. Howard Gayle had earlier headed onto a post from a Jimmy Case corner, while making his fifth and final reds appearance. Midfielder Peter Cormack nabbed the only goal of the game in December 1975 on his 178th and final reds appearance.

We won 5-3 in September 1924, with three of our goals coming in the last ten minutes. Danny Shone netted twice with Dick Johnson bagging his thirtieth and last reds goal and Donald Mackinlay and Dick Forshaw also on the scoresheet. Frank Roberts struck the first two of his six goals past us, with Horace Barnes bagging one of his nine.

Forward Sam Bowyer struck the last of his sixteen reds goals in January 1911, a last-minute equaliser as we were held 1-1. Outside-right Dick Edmed made his 170th and final reds outing as we lost 2-0 in November 1930. Centre-half Bob Ferguson played his 103rd and final reds game, with Fred Pagnam, Arthur Metcalf and Tom Miller on target in a 3-2 victory in March 1915, with Fred Howard scoring the last of his nine goals against us and Horace Barnes again on target. Centre-forward Tommy Gracie bagged his fifth and final reds goal as we won 4-2 on Christmas Day in 1913, with Jackie Sheldon netting a brace and Billy Lacey also on the scoresheet. Fred Howard converted two penalties for the visitors.

A poor start

Ronnie Whelan netted as we lost 3-1 in 1981, as we ended Boxing Day in the bottom half of the table. Rookie keeper Bruce Grobbelaar was responsible for two of the goals, while Kenny Dalglish was employed ‘in the hole’ behind Ian Rush and Craig Johnston for the first time. Phil Thompson lost the captaincy to Graeme Souness following this defeat as we went on to stage the mother of all comebacks to clinch our thirteenth League title. Kevin Reeves bagged the last of his four goals past us, with Asa Hartford netting and Kevin Bond scoring from the spot.

Other trebles

In March 1937, Eric Brook struck three times as we were thumped 5-0, with Alex Herd adding one of his eight goals past us and Peter Doherty also on the scoresheet. In October 1906, Bobby Robinson scored a hat-trick in our 5-4 victory, to add to goals from Sam Raybould and Billy McPherson. Irvine Thornley struck twice for the visitors, with Billy Jones and George Stewart also scoring. Forward Sam Raybould bagged a treble in our 4-0 win in March 1902, with winger Jack Cox netting the other.

Firsts

City’s first trip to Anfield came in December 1893 when they were still known as Ardwick. We started as we meant to continue, winning 3-0, with James Stott, Hugh McQueen and Hugh Henderson scoring. Joe Corrigan’s first game at Anfield ended in a 3-2 reds win in August 1969, thanks to late goals from Roger Hunt and Ian St. John’s second, with Tommy Smith putting through his own net and Ian Bowyer also on target for the Citizens. We headed the League table for the first time in March 1986 after a 2-0 Easter Monday win, courtesy of a brace from future Blue Steve McMahon. Tom Miller nabbed a brace with Walter Wadsworth scoring his first reds goal in our 4-2 season opening victory in August 1920. Donald Mackinlay also struck, with Tommy Browell bagging one of his seven goals against us and Ernest Goodwin also netting.

Penalty sagas

Robbie Fowler had a penalty saved by Andy Dibble in front of the Kop in December 1994, but netted three minutes later as we won 2-0, to add to a Terry Phelan own goal. We were held to a 2-2 draw in February 1904 with Sam Raybould and Robert Robinson on target as Arthur Goddard missed a penalty. Billy Gillespie scored the last of his five goals past us, with Tommy Hynds also scoring.

Phil Neal converted a late penalty to hand us a 1-0 victory in November 1978 after Ray Kennedy was apparently fouled in the area, although he admitted, “I don’t know what the penalty was for.” However, we had been denied a clear spot-kick earlier for a foul on Alan Kennedy.

The late captain

Roger Hunt was on the scoresheet while skippering the side for the first time as we were held to a 1-1 draw in December 1967, with Franny Lee netting one of his six goals past us. Hunt and Tommy Lawrence had both separately been stuck in traffic getting to the match, whose start had to be delayed, leading to a hefty fine for the club. Both players eventually abandoned their cars and ran to the ground to try to make kick-off!

Rushie off

We were held to a goalless draw in August 1986, with Ian Rush sent off for ‘foul or abusive language’ as he was leaving the pitch at the end of the game, although this was later rescinded.

We proved that Chelsea are nothing special over 2 games and City are no better.

Quit all this bulls*** of "I'll take one point"

We can beat these regardless of who plays, so come f***ing on.

A draw would be Utopia. I just can't see us getting any more than that sadly. I don't know whether I think this is off the back of last night or of watching City demolish Newcastle last week.

Posted (edited)

Henderson, Coutinho & Sakho all back in, fit and fresh. Markovic also fresh and available. Sturridge needs to up his level and Sterling too, but feel a bit more confident than I was this morning. We can beat these.
