Getting a dog

So, me and the wife had a serious chat about having a third child and pretty much ruled it out. We've both been pretty broody lately but the practicalities of it don't really stack up. As a compromise we think we'll get a dog. The wife fancies a King Charles I want a Boston Terrier (I think). Needs to be fairly small really, we haven't got a massive garden and the kids are still small.

 

Anyone got any advice/regrets on bringing a dog into a family? Any alternative breeds to ones mentioned that might be worth looking at?
