I wonder if this is our new default formation now and we'll take it into next season or is it a stop gap until we get everyone fit? Personally I think it is getting the best out of our players and has made us a lot more solid defensively and we should stick with it.

I think it carries on next season but there is a big problem with it in that Can needs to be in the midfield with Stevie gone and a lot of the solidity and fluidity with it is in his ability to carry the ball out which won't be there if he is no longer in the back three. We basically needs two Emres in there next season.

It's not the formation - it's the players within the formation.

 

We can't chuck any old defenders into a back 3 and expect to see the same.

 

It wasn't working with the previous formation, so Brendan has found one that compliments our players strengths and his goals as a manager

Van dijk from Celtic wwould give us similar to can at the back - quick, strong, comfortable.bringing the ball out. Then move can into midfield. Lucas ahead of Milner also.

The thing is BR has seen that we are capable of playing this new system well.

 

I would say chances are whatever signings we make in the summer will be ones who are comfortable playing both our previous shape and now this new one.

Yes, if Milner was earmarked for CM, I'd think it was in the Henderson role, not alongside him.

But that is what Can is / will be. He's doing a great job, but he's not a centre half.

It's certainly better than Henderson and Milner.

 

Henderson has his strengths and weaknesses (I happen to think the latter are glossed over on here but that's old ground). I dont see Milner as being a complementary midfield partner.

Since we have been linked with him, I have tried to watch as many bits of City game when he has been on the pitch, he is a tireless worker, rarely gives the ball away, is good at dead ball situations, likes to pass and move.

 

Now given he isn't lightening quick, he hasn't got the stature of a Yaya Toure, he hasn't got the dribbling ability of a Sterling or a Hazard

but as a top squad player from midfield forward he would give an excellent option.
