it was a thing in the 80's for a bit.

Aye - Rushie's 2nd half hat-trick v Villa springs to mind :)

As does losing at The Dell

be interested to know what regular match-going fans thought of it. it'd be the purest tv-centric move ever.

Much rather they kept it to Saturdays or Sundays at a push, obviously.

In terms of weekday games though, Friday night is miles better than Monday night.

I'd happily take Friday night football in exchange for Monday nights.

The end of season title decider of '89 was a Friday night game, wasn't it?

it was, because of Hillsborough. The match was originally scheduled for April 23.

ITV also stuck their oar in to make it the last game of the season.

Yeah but for different reasons.

That's the only Friday night game I remember, to be honest. How long were they a thing for?

There were a few in the mid 80s. Don't remember any after 89 though

I think they're a good idea. Second best slot (after Saturday 3pm) for me.

Better than Sunday afternoons and Monday nights definitely.

Would like to see one game each week on a Sat evening too.

Fri night, Sat 3pm and Sat 7pm.

Obviously will never happen with the demand for blanket live coverage, but would be nice.

I seem to remember playing the barcodes on a friday night when Keegan was playing in the earlyish 80s, might have been an fa cup tie? Think we won 4-0 but they were a bloody noisy lot,

Sure that wasn't an episode of Auf Wiedersehen Pet ?

I think the idea stinks. The road network in the north west grinds to a halt most Friday nights so anyone who is not local (i.e. within the boundaries of Merseyside) will have a hideous journey. Those who live some distance away will probably have to take time off work.

It's also good to be able to rely on at least one night in the week when you can plan other activities well in advance without worrying if Sky or BT are going to shift your game and leave you with a clash. Friday night has been that night for some time and now it's going the way of every other night of the week.

For the match going fan, the continued growth of live football on TV has been a disaster - matches constantly being rearranged, not a hint of a subsidy for match tickets and lots of very average footballers and their agents earning obscene wages.

That's the case for Monday night games already. In my case, I have to take a day or half day off on the Tuesday too.

At least with Friday night, getting up for work the next morning wouldn't be an issue (for people working Mon-Fri).

I think we should do away with 3pm saturday kick offs and leave it to the football league and non league. prem games moved to a sunday, with Friday and Saturday evening games as well

Posted

It does but I'm not sure that's reason enough to majorly inconvenience loads of fans who travel from outside the NW to the games.

Friday night to replace Monday night, would be good.

Replacing Saturday games with Friday night ones, however....nah.
