Best players we've signed since we won the title

Was thinking about this today. A fair number of best players since that time have been those who came through the academy - Gerrard, Carragher, Fowler, Owen, McManaman all spring to mind.

But who are the five best players we've signed since 1990. And I don't mean the best value - just the best players full stop.

Sure I'll miss some but my five would be:

Suarez

Torres

Alonso

Mascherano

Hyypia

Other contenders:

Reina

Babbel

Hamman

Sturridge

Finnan

Poulsen

It says quite a lot about our transfer record over a long period how relatively slight the list of absolutely clear successes is. The inability to go for the best players has time and again been an issue. I remember seeing a game in maybe about 1992 when we drew 0-0 against Forest at Anfield. I was 15 and it was clear to me that day that Roy Keane, then maybe 20, was a the best player on the pitch by an absolute mile. When we left the field clear for Blackburn and United to compete for him I knew we were heard in the wrong direction. I think at the time Paul Stewart was a regular for us...

It's early to tell but the signs of this Summer don't look promising. I'd happily swap everyone we signed for Costa and Fabregas for instance. Hopefully a few come through and that statement looks silly in a year or two but I'm not confident. It's very depressing that we didn't sign players who would walk straight into the first team - instead gambling on a load who probably weren't better than what we had in most cases.

Anyway sorry for that diversion - who would other's best five be?

litmanen. always litmanen.

Brilliant to watch at times but I don't think he was remotely as good as some we've signed.

I'm gonna go for 5 signed for a pittance.

Hyppia

McAllister

Aurelio

Sterling

Arbeloa

Yeah they'd top the value list but only Sami would have a good claim to be one of the best five we've signed in twenty years. IMHO.

Not really. Suarez is one of the best players in the world right now. Alonso is one of the best midfielders of his generation and arguably one of the greatest midfielders in the last 30-odd years. For those two, it's more a case of not keeping them.

I think if we drew up similar lists for Arsenal, Chelsea, United it wouldn't make pretty reading.

Nah he was better. I'm nitpicking but you said best players we've signed, not how good they ultimately turned out to be for us. Litmanen was a bona fide genius.

I used to watch Eurosport on a Sunday night that would round up goals in European leagues and I used to love the Eredivisie section purely for watching Bergkamp at Ajax. When he left, I was a bit gutted but glad he went to Inter (loved them since the days of the 3 Germans, Brehme, Matthaus and Klinsmann). But then they replaced him with Litmanen, just brilliant.

Masch was an excellent midfielder here - just couldn't pass like Xabi or score goals like Gerrard.

We've had some great players in central positions - it's in wide positions, particularly the left, where we've struggled to find similar quality.

Didi was a great buy.

Arguably more impact than Mascherano.

Dont think there is any argument considering what we won with him.

I think the argument is, which player would you rather have playing that role - one was a hunter that would chase down the opposition, the other smelled danger coming and lay in wait.

What's interesting about that, if you think about it, is how many of those rate in a list of 'best players we've had since we won the title (discounting that title side ) :

The list would be something like this :

Gerrard

Suarez

Torres

Owen

Alonso

McManaman

Fowler

Carragher

Hyypia

Macherano

(btw I think we'll come to add Sterling, Sturridge , Coutinho and Henderson to that list)

Half of them are academy developed. Makes ya think.

All of the above have played massive contributions to seasons and/or trophies of great significance.

That's a good point but its been a very long time since one rolled off that conveyor belt with Gerrard being the last in 1998.

I think we can count Sterling in there as we got him when he was 15(?), I think.
