nice goal

this 1000 career goals thing with pele is b****x

if he scored 50 a season he would need 20 seasons to get 1000

theres no way he got 1000.

messi scored his 400th goal recently at 27 years old. ronaldo probably hasnt even got 400 and hes 30 and these 2 guys are phenomenal goalscorers

pele must be including all the goals he scored in training too

According to his Wiki page

1959 - scored 53 in 43 official club games. Scored 47 in 40 friendlies giving him an annual total of 100 goals in 83 club appearances. He was 18 until October.

Two years later it was 110 in 74 games.

Maybe he was just quite good?

How do you get away with making up your own appearances/goals record? It's not like he was the bloke keeping a running total that everyone asked for the figures.

I think it was the Brazilian FA and/or government. He was a pretty iconic figure that they really wanted to make a huge deal about. I think they had some law about him not being able to be sold to a team overseas too.

Don't get me wrong, I think he was an awesome player. In the few times I saw him play, you could clearly tell he was very special.

You'd assume that even at an insane ratio of 1 goal/game, he'd have had to played an average of 60 games for 20 years.

And?

How many of his 1279 goals are you saying were made up?

Thanks. Glad someone was paying attention

Needed a new thread started though (or maybe it was and someone edited/moderated it?)

Has it listed as 'official' total vs 'total including friendlies', while at Santos.

Oh, and he's not even no.1 - scrapes into top 5 tongue.gif

This ranking is based just by the RSSSF, which does count club and national goals and goals scored in friendly matches. RSSSF also counts matches in lower divisions as well as in club's amateur and reserve teams, junior national teams and in other selection teams like some Pelé's matches in military team.[1]

His career wasn't like anyone else's.

He didn't get to play in Europe. He got dragged around the globe and generally exploited for the promotion/good of Brazil/Brazilian football.

When he did get to compete as others do he was f*cking brilliant.

The desire to denigrate the career of one of (if not) the all-time greats is weird.

He was MILES better than the second best player in the world throughout his career too.

Yeah, I didn't quite have the balls to go full Romario

a french humorist once said "an elegant man is a man who is able to play the bag pipe but does not play the bag pipe".
