Our back four v Spurs had a combined total of 23 games for Liverpool between them. They are all young but looked good, still work to do, but it all looks promising.

A clean sheet away at Spurs has to be promising.

The back five had also never played a game together as a unit before. The two CBs need to work on stuff, but the signs are promising

No Johnson, no Skrtel, no worries

A Belgian, a Frenchman, 2 Spaniards and a Croatian, there's bound to be communication difficulties in the early days leading to problems like the 2 chances in the 1st half yesterday. Got a bit lucky with them, but hopefully time will make them a stronger and more cohesive unit.

Having watched the game again (a few times) i watched the defense as much as i could and it was pretty obvious that both center backs were watching each others position. When Either Lovren or Sakho moved out or in the other quickly followed and the full backs did the same, it was almost like a chain. It stuck out when i compared it to last week at city when Lovren went to meet the attacker and Sktrel say 5yrds deeper, both him and Johnson playing everyone onside (not Johnson's fault). This is why Spurs got caught off side a few times. They just need to sort it out the mess of the two of them going for the same ball and leaving the space in behind.

Communication between Sakho and Lovren lacking a few times. Few f***ups from Sakho, Lovren and Manquillo in the buildup. All understandable given how new they all are. Aside from those, I liked the look of it and hope this backfour will be given the chance to prove itself.

Sakho looks like a really poor addition especially for the price. How did he end up being the captain of PSG and a regular for France

Through accurate assessment of his performance level?

I know it was his first game time back for a long, long while. But Jose Enrique looked slow, cumbersome and carrying a lot of timber in comparison to Moreno.

He was France's best defender in the world cup

France did not pull up any tree.

Sakho looks like Traore with strength . His passing is extremely poor but hopefully it will improve

passing accuracy of 89.6, which is similar to Lovren and just below Skrtel

in comparison Terry is 84%

according to whoscored.com

and regarding the Traore comparison, you wouldn't have made that comparison had Sakho been white. FACT

Think the passing thing is overplayed because he looks really awkward when passing the ball, but it normally finds his target

When you are a defender normally finding the target is not good enough

You mean he's black? :ohmy:/> ;)

Sakho does normally find the target but it's mostly the same drilled 15-20 yard pass to a central midfielder often tightly marked and so immediately under pressure when they receive it. Needs to vary it a bit. Would definitely give him and Lovren the chance to form a partnership.

So with already a dodgy defence, an underpforming goal keeper from last season, 3 new players starting in the defence. Has Rodgers underestimated the challenge of getting it all working?

Don't get me wrong, there have been some very very basic mistakes, but I can't help but feel there has been very little thought as to how this will all work, other than putting them together and hoping for the best. Sakho doesn't convince me, Lovren hasn't been commanding and Skrtel has always blown hot and cold. Throw in two other younger lads with one of them very attacking minded and you seem to have a recipe for disaster, that is without mentioning Mingolet.

It's clear there is much work to be done, much more understanding to be achieved. Playing the way we play is great when you have an assortment of attacking talent in form and firing, but when you don't, you need your defence to be solid, and we are far from it. It's a massive crticism of this Liverpool team, and I feel of Rodgers in particular, looking at City yesterday you can see just how balanced their side is, yes it was great watching the football last year, but we're starting to see that we really need to get this defence right otherwise we're going to be caught out more often than not, especially by sides like West Ham who are very direct.

Rodgers has mis-managed thedefence in my mind, incorporating all these new players is a challenge I don't we think we have taken seriously.
