I know that this thread takes a different view of an 'assist' and its a very subjective issue.

 

However, I've a look at one of the stats websites and here are the assists they have given.

 

Southampton: Henderson and Sterling

City: Nothing for the og

Spurs: Henderson and Allen but nothing for Moreno

West Ham: Nothing for Balotelli

Everton: Nothing for Balotelli

Problem with that minimalist approach to assists is you end up dishing out relatively few and that in turn makes the sample less informative. You end with your top assister getting something like 8 for the season and that's just not a great indicator of anything . The sample above shows just 4 assists from 8 goals . It's silly. You can't say nobody contributed to half our goals bar the scorer.

 

Also, it's not as if the ones that do count have a particularly high quality threshold. If you tap it to guy who nets from 40 yards you have an assist, but if you dribble round four and get tripped in the box you get nothing.

Its a very subjective topic and about I think the only way to make it as objective as possible is to define it, as you say, as the person who last passed the ball to the goalscorer. Whilst defines it more easily, you point out that it lowers the quality of the exercise and I agree. I find it a bit strange that Balotelli didnt get the one for Sterling at West Ham.

 

Anyway, I just put it up to contrast Cunny's methodology with the stats databases. I think the debate was done to death last year or the year before.
