Cleaning/wiping a laptop

Are there any decent free tools out there for wiping a laptop? I have a work one which is so rubbish that I have had it replaced and our IT guy has told me it is so shoite I can keep it/sell it on but he's asked me to wipe it before I did owt like that to make sure any commercially sensitive data was cleared away. Never done anything like this before - so anyone got any tried and tested guidelines / software recommendations?

 

And yes, cue jokes bout porn, fraud etc. etc.
