I see in the wake of Xabi's suspension from the ECF, the Guardian is running one of its stupid polls "Should suspensions be wiped out so players can play in finals?"

 

For reds, no, there is an argument for second yellows, although UEFA did go a way to helping on this by wiping yellows after the group stages.

 

and also a couple of weeks ago a more opaque eradicate 'double punishment' - red card and a penalty situations

 

What would you change?

kill the away goal rule.

Bring in video technology

mic the refs

re-introduce the law where you move the ball fwd 10y on a FK if there's dissent

bring in those Brasilian aerosols where the ref marks the pitch for where the ball is on a FK, where the wall has to stand behind etc

What about rather than playing with less men you miss more games? Straight red for violent conduct currently is 3 games, make it 9 games? Red card for second yellow card is 1 game make it 5 games? kind of agree that it can ruin the result in many games, but what other legitmate option is there? Would you give a goal to a team rather than send a player off playing against them?

 

I would like to see it get to where rugby is with dissent, but it would probably be near impossible to do.

I like the away goals rule. Based on a memory full of holes is say it has served us well.

I'd agree with, really unfair that the home team in the 2nd leg benefits from the luck of the draw.

 

I'd introduce the sin bin during the game. For example Dissent gets you 5 minutes off the pitch, professional foul 10 minutes. Think there's also an argument you could use the sin bin instead of issuing the 1st/2nd yellow card. The sin bin benefits the team offended against rather than the team that comes next.

I like that. He's in Starbucks with his kids, the FA Whipper bursts in and says "sorry but Doncaster are about to kick off at Torquay".

 

No good for last weekend but if a team is judged to be responsible for the vast majority time wasting but is then losing at 90 minutes there is no added time.

 

EDIT: hmmm, if that team then scores in the added time then it doesn't count. FOM.

the issue with yellows in semi finals are, if you have 2 players on opposing teams one yellow away from a ban, and both get booked, one misses the final, the other has his wiped out for the new season, so in effect isnt actually punished. it isnt really fair

change it back to the late 60s/early 70s when players could get away with kicking lumps out if each other. It'd end nonceball at a stroke.

league cup has it the other way around. away goals don't count up till 90 minutes of the second leg, but they do count after extra time. so 0-0, 1-1 means extra time, but then if no more goals are scored the away team win

I do think the two instant wins for fans and the reputation of the game would be changes around players trying to referee the matches and diving/cheating.

 

It doesn't necessarily need to be a big dive to win a penalty... I'm more on about those instances where you have two players running side-by-side and one goes to ground; almost like 'taking the knee' in American Football. Cole did one against Sterling early on Sunday. The ref just presumes there's been a foul when he should be thinking "why have you sat down softlad... the other fella is now through".

What would happen in the women's game ?

 

I banged myself in the nuts the other day. I was pulling a nail out with a claw hammer and it suddenly came free. The momentum carried the hammer into my trouser area, and even though I managed to slow the hammer in that split second, it still gently tapped a gland. I was not in a good place for some time.

So it should be a foul if he uses his arms or body.

Any dissent shown towards the ref, even a muttered word is a yellow card.

Only captains and the offending player are allowed to talk to the ref after a FK is given, anyone else is booked.

Managers banned from talking to refs in the tunnel (e.g. Mourinho yesterday), instant red card if ref is approached.

 

Think the one someone mentioned about defenders just falling over when being chased by an attacker is a good one, it's just a reflexive foul given now.
