FOOTBALL fans across the country are being called to take part in a 96-minute-walk around Dublin's Phoenix Park to commemorate Liverpool fans who died at the Hillsborough stadium disaster.

The walk, scheduled for Saturday April 12, marks the 25th anniversary of the deaths of the 96 Liverpool fans crushed in an over-crowded terrace at an FA Cup semi-final game against Nottingham Forest in 1989.

The event, called Ireland Walks With The 96, is being organised by the YNWA Irish Reds supporters' club with support from other Liverpool supporters' club.

The walk will begin at seven minutes past three – the time play the game was suspended by the referee as news of the carnage that was ensuing in the terraces reached the field.

A special route, beginning at the Papal Cross, has been laid out for the 96-minute-walk after which there will be a short prayer service and a minute silence.

Afterwards 96 balloons will be released and letters are also to be read out by representatives from family support groups in Liverpool, including one from the chair of the Hillsborough Family Support Group Margaret Aspinall, who lost her son James in the tragedy.

Organiser Simon Mooney told the Herald the event was not just for Liverpool fans, but football supports across the country.

"We've got 96 red T-shirts printed which we will give out on the day and we're hoping everyone else who attends will wear their red colours or whatever football jerseys they want.

"We want to get as many people there as possible on the day to mark the 25th anniversary. The idea started when we got talking on forums and the Facebook page online. It's all just happened in the last two weeks," he said.

Simon added that he is hopeful Liverpool legend Ronnie Whelan (inset above) will also make an appearance while other Irish players on the day, including John Aldridge, have also been invited.
