pub recommendation downtown and at anfield

Flying in over the weekend for the first time in a few years and will stay at novotel near Liverpool one. Last few times we've been to the Albert b4 the game. I'd appreciate some other good places close to the stadium and also for a Saturday night drink in the city centre. Cheers!

There's a whole 'bars' thread in the General forum which might be useful.

A few regulars go into the King Charles on match day (but it's a s*** pub otherwise), and the Arkles is another regular pre-match YNWA haunt.

is the Flat Iron the new pub of choice before? i might pop in Sunday. I usually head teh King Harry afterwards now.

I tend to go there.

Not sure why, other than my wife pronounced the NYC district of the same name as the flateeron district. Which still amuses me now.

either there or the Merebank before depending on where I'm coming from, not usually after though

What's the Flatty like these days? Used to be pub of choice years ago, but it seemed to turn into a bit of an away pub.

Have ventured back their a couple of times this season, has been ok when I've been in but it is a trek from where I park.

Oldham fan got stabbed outside there after the Cup game which hasn't particularly enticed me back since.

Not to do with the pub that though.

The anfield road up that end has seen a bit of scrapping this season in general. Been weird

Yeah, just decided to swerve it after that though.

For about ten or more years up to about 2009 it was the usual pre and sometimes post match haunt but it just seemed to get increasingly populated with bellends and away fans - who, as their numbers increased, became more unpleasant.

Can remember it being pretty tasty in there for Cardiff in 07 and the Chelsea European Cup games in 08 and 09.

Was fine when I went this season to be fair, albeit that that they had a bouncer who whilst being very friendly and chatty also seemed to be tottering on the edge of extreme violence.

We'd been going to Le Rouge, which was s*** but just very convenient. Kind of publess at the moment.

King Harry is ok for afterwards, its a big boozer that clears out quickly. The toilets are a disgrace though.

Been meeting a mate at the bar in Epsteins hotel on Anny Road. It's alright. Wrong end for you though!

Tell that to the Taxi driver who decided on Wednesday that the best way to the ground from town was via Priory Road and Arkles Lane.

Words were had.

Epstein's isn't out of the question. Half of us are in the Main Stand anyway.
