SkippyjonJones Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 (edited) http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/26383249 total garbage - great defender but his laid back, quiet style was never England captain material.Main captains during his time...Shearer, Beckham, Terry He's seriously trying to claim that he was better in a captains role.... has he got a new book coming out? (oops - just seen that he has - in that article I linked to.) Edited March 2, 2014 by SkippyjonJones
Ombudsam Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Yeah I make him wrong. The captains of the time were clearly chosen for a reason. There's loads of areas in football/life where what the black guys do is viewed differently to what the white guys do but this is just Sol being a bit whiny,
Rimbeux Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 He's just wrong. It's a shame he's eating himself up
Kvarme Ate My Food Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Beckham is the one he perhaps could have beaten. But Beckham campaigned openly for the captaincy during a managerial power vacuum, and was always going to win in those circumstances.
SkippyjonJones Posted March 2, 2014 Author Posted March 2, 2014 Yeah I make him wrong. The captains of the time were clearly chosen for a reason. There's loads of areas in football/life where what the black guys do is viewed differently to what the white guys do but this is just Sol being a bit whiny, exactly - overall he has a point but he wasn't the right guy at that time. if they'd picked someone like Jeff Thomas then I'd be on Sol's side....
Cobs Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Hoddle picked Shearer cos he thought it'd win us more penalties Don't recall Beckham campaigning for the job. Taylor gave him the gig a bit out of the blue, Campbell was injured at the time, I think and Sven kept with him. That was it.
psl Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 He mentions Owen getting it ahead of him but how many times did Owen captain England?
Cobs Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 He mentions Owen getting it ahead of him but how many times did Owen captain England?9 times Campbell did it 3 times, Ince 7, Rio 7
Cam Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 How often was Paul Ince captain? Campbell's biggest stumbling blocks were the two glory boys of English football - Shearer and Beckham - not that he was black. And they were never not going to be Captain. And in all fairness to Beckham, whilst he was never traditional on-pitch Captain-material he was bloody brilliant at the role in a statesman-like way. That's what the FA wanted and perhaps that's what the game needed... particularly with World Cups to bid for. The more reserved and quite insular Campbell was never going to be up to that.

Cobs Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Beckham was all over the Press saying he wanted it.Before or after Taylor gave it to him?
Kvarme Ate My Food Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Before or after Taylor gave it to him? After I think.Taylor gave it to him, then Sven kept him there for his first match - Beckham was quite cool about it up to that point. Then he began a full-on campaign to be named permanent captain.
muleskinner Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 the FA don't choose the captain its the coach, does he think Ericsson and Hoddle were prevented from appointing him?
surf Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 i can understand annoyance at losing out to a younger owen.
Cobs Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 pretty much everyone in the game/connected to this has said he's talking bolllocks still, might help him shift a few books
muleskinner Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Graeme Taylor dismissed it as a pile of s*** on the radio at lunchtime.
PhilM Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 It is a pile of s***. He's "playing the race card" in a trivial and ridiculous fashion to try and sell a book. It's sad, because he's one of English football's most high profile and successful black footballers.
Stevie H Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 pretty much everyone in the game/connected to this has said he's talking bolllocks still, might help him shift a few books ian wright was interesting on sunday's 606 with kelly cates. said the same thing. apart from the books bit.
RP Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Heard him on the radio earlier saying he had the stature, personality and charisma for the role ... but he was (is) just the wrong colour. F*ck off, Sol.
Dan Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Slightly related - programme on C4 now about racism on the terraces. f***ing depressing.
Ripley Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Heard him on the radio earlier saying he had the stature, personality and charisma for the role ... but he was (is) just the wrong colour. F*ck off, Sol.More than that. He said that in 2003/04 he was the best centre half in the world. Not even the best CH in a combined Liverpool/Arsenal team.
Hassony Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 he was a superb centre back no where near the best in the world at any stage of his career though , ridiculous claim
