total garbage - great defender but his laid back, quiet style was never England captain material.

Main captains during his time...Shearer, Beckham, Terry

He's seriously trying to claim that he was better in a captains role....

has he got a new book coming out? (oops - just seen that he has - in that article I linked to.)

Yeah I make him wrong. The captains of the time were clearly chosen for a reason.

There's loads of areas in football/life where what the black guys do is viewed differently to what the white guys do but this is just Sol being a bit whiny,

exactly - overall he has a point but he wasn't the right guy at that time.

if they'd picked someone like Jeff Thomas then I'd be on Sol's side....

Hoddle picked Shearer cos he thought it'd win us more penalties

Don't recall Beckham campaigning for the job. Taylor gave him the gig a bit out of the blue, Campbell was injured at the time, I think and Sven kept with him. That was it.

He mentions Owen getting it ahead of him but how many times did Owen captain England?

9 times

Campbell did it 3 times, Ince 7, Rio 7

How often was Paul Ince captain?

Campbell's biggest stumbling blocks were the two glory boys of English football - Shearer and Beckham - not that he was black. And they were never not going to be Captain.

And in all fairness to Beckham, whilst he was never traditional on-pitch Captain-material he was bloody brilliant at the role in a statesman-like way. That's what the FA wanted and perhaps that's what the game needed... particularly with World Cups to bid for. The more reserved and quite insular Campbell was never going to be up to that.

Beckham was all over the Press saying he wanted it.

Before or after Taylor gave it to him?

After I think.

Taylor gave it to him, then Sven kept him there for his first match - Beckham was quite cool about it up to that point. Then he began a full-on campaign to be named permanent captain.

pretty much everyone in the game/connected to this has said he's talking bolllocks

still, might help him shift a few books

It is a pile of s***. He's "playing the race card" in a trivial and ridiculous fashion to try and sell a book. It's sad, because he's one of English football's most high profile and successful black footballers.

Heard him on the radio earlier saying he had the stature, personality and charisma for the role ... but he was (is) just the wrong colour.

F*ck off, Sol.

More than that. He said that in 2003/04 he was the best centre half in the world.

Not even the best CH in a combined Liverpool/Arsenal team.
