Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Late notice but he was in NY tonight, as a spinoff of promoting the tour. So we had a Q&A. f***ing hell out of nowhere GOD was there. So general stuff - he doesn't and didn't hate Gerard. He hated every manager he played for, he fell out with them all...he bigged up Roy Evans though - for his man management skills; although there was one RE story about the joint management thing... Best player he played with - Stan. Best moment - re-signing for the club. Feeling about raping Gary Neville and scoring vs the Mancs - doesn't really care, doesn't care enough about them to hate them. Youth player to make it big - he (being part of the setup) wasn't prepared to talk about names because they're under enough pressure anyway but he did let Jordan Rossiter's name slip out. His desert island game - my question - the one he'd take to the grave - he mentioned his debut, the a*** hattrick, scoring vs Everton (in front of the Kop) after returning from a broken leg, but the one he really fell back on was the Charlton game in 2001. What it meant for the club & players. He was laughing telling us they weren't allowed to drink after the Cup Final or after the UEFA Cup Final, but he says they put that right after the Charlton game. He says that 2nd half was as good as an LFC team had played in a decade. f***ing hell, Robbie
magneto Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Had a few beers with him, Macca and a few of the other LFC legends when they were down here in South Africa (I helped promote the tour on twitter). The most down-to-earth lads you could ever imagine. I was in awe of them growing up.
JRC Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Best player her played with - Stan? Some call that, with McManaman, Barnes and Gerrard in the frame. And Owen,of course....
Zoob Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Best player her played with - Stan? Some call that, with McManaman, Barnes and Gerrard in the frame. And Owen,of course.... Probably Gerrard too young, Barnes too old when Robbie was at his peak. But stll wouldn't have expected him to say Collymore...
Stevie H Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 nice one macca. what did he say about your hair?
growler Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Best player her played with - Stan? Some call that, with McManaman, Barnes and Gerrard in the frame. And Owen,of course.... Not really, collymore was stupidly talented, just messed in the head. With a stronger manager, could've been truly world class. Their partnership was amazing.
Cunny Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Stan could have been one of the best players in the world. He clearly had issues and never helped himself but I don't think he got the help from the club he needed. Probably just through ignorance. If he played now, he would have access to Steve Peters (or someone like him) and that could have made all the difference. Fowler and Collymore were ridiculously good together.Shame that team couldn't defend when it mattered, sound familiar?
sangria Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Not really, collymore was stupidly talented, just messed in the head. With a stronger manager, could've been truly world class. Their partnership was amazing. Up there with the original Ronaldo in everything but his stupid, messed up head. Unfortunate considering that's the most important part of any player.
Boca Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Up there with the original Ronaldo in everything but his stupid, messed up head. Unfortunate considering that's the most important part of any player. Bloody hell. Collymore was talented, but that's just a ridiculous call.
Snookie Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Up there with the original Ronaldo in everything but his stupid, messed up head. Unfortunate considering that's the most important part of any player. That's just b****x. Colyemore was a talented player who underachieved. Ronaldo is an all-time great.
Swan Red Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Collymore had everything. I think the Ronaldo comparison struggles because of their respective achievements it's tough to know how good Collymore could have been but I wouldn't dismiss it as quickly.
baz2107 Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Probably Gerrard too young, Barnes too old when Robbie was at his peak. But stll wouldn't have expected him to say Collymore...He played with Gerrard in 2006-2007 as he was approaching his peak. Collymore was incredible when he wanted to be though
Benzo-13 Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Collymore had everything. I think the Ronaldo comparison struggles because of their respective achievements it's tough to know how good Collymore could have been but I wouldn't dismiss it as quickly.Myself and a few mates thought that at the time too.He had the attributes and unstoppable when on it.George Weah was playing for PSG at the time and thought Stan was every bit his equal.
cymrococh Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Collymore had everything. I think the Ronaldo comparison struggles because of their respective achievements it's tough to know how good Collymore could have been but I wouldn't dismiss it as quickly.Collymore was good, but Ronaldo was a world star from a young age. There's really no comparison.

I think the Ronaldo comparison struggles because of their respective achievements it's tough to know how good Collymore could have been but I wouldn't dismiss it as quickly. Strength, stature, pace, technique in all aspects of the game, two footed. All the stuff people raved about over Ronaldo, Collymore also had. Bar his head, which was as far from right as could be.

I think the Ronaldo comparison struggles because of their respective achievements it's tough to know how good Collymore could have been but I wouldn't dismiss it as quickly. Just a bit meaningless though isn't it? Collymore was a great wasted talent, we can all agree on that. Saying that he 'Could have been as good as X' is just speculation - and when 'X' is one of the greatest players of the last 50 years then it is wild speculation at that.

Saying that he 'Could have been as good as X' is just speculation - and when 'X' is one of the greatest players of the last 50 years then it is wild speculation at that. It goes to show how the 90s team wasted their talent, not to have won a single title with that talent at their disposal. I still rage when I think of Ruddock and his stories. I wish Magath had been around to take care of aholes like him.

I think the Ronaldo comparison struggles because of their respective achievements it's tough to know how good Collymore could have been but I wouldn't dismiss it as quickly. He plainly didn't have everything. He lacked the competitiveness and mental strength required to be a truly great player for one thing.

Saying that he 'Could have been as good as X' is just speculation - and when 'X' is one of the greatest players of the last 50 years then it is wild speculation at that. Isn't the Maradonna / Pele discussion meaningless? You can evaluate a players attributes and Ronaldo is the one I thought at the time Collymore was most like. He plainly didn't have everything. He lacked the competitiveness and mental strength required to be a truly great player for one thing. Given the context I thought that was a given.
cymrococh Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 He plainly didn't have everything. He lacked the competitiveness and mental strength required to be a truly great player for one thing. He also wasn't as good at football.
Swan Red Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Collymore was good, but Ronaldo was a world star from a young age. There's really no comparison. There's always a comparison, you can compare black and white if you so wish. In any case if we had the best return on his footballing skills he would have been part of a conversation on Liverpool's best ever players. That puts him in whatever other conversations there are.
johngibo YPC Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 He did a podcast thing for Irish radio recently when he mentioned Collymore in that way tooIt was a good listen actually. I will try and dig it out
Chili Palmer Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 I agree with those who say Collymore had it all to be a top player, bar the right attitude. There are probably a lot more like him tbf.
Nerik Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 I think it was Evans' lack of man management and discipline that was one of the causes of the 1997 team falling to pieces when we reached the CWC semi and were in with a great shout for the title.
