disappearing disk space

My laptop is 7 years old, so has outlived many others in my household, but I'm having an almost constant problem where disk space disappears. I'll clear programmes and files, have over a gig of free space, and then within a couple hours, having not even been browsing, I'll be down to under 100 megs.

 

Any idea what the heck is going on?
