Murphman Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 I don't have many on my list. I've met quite a few for a fleeting minute but not that many ex pro's I know fairly well, i.e. would stop and have a natter if I bumped into them. They all have a take to tell but there's one I never get sick of talking to. Gavin Maguire (Ex QPR and Pompey) nice lad until he has a beer, Gav caused havoc in the days he drank locally with Pat Van Den Hauwe (sp?), his nickame is Mad dog 'cos finished Danny Thomas' career with THE worst tackle in living memory. But he's alright is Gavin, nowadays anyway. He played for Wales quite a few times and one night was the subject of Question of sport 'what happened next'. Well what happened next was he had no options down the line, nobody coming short, nobody showing long so knocked it back from out wide to Neville Southall without looking, a sort of sloppy underhit cross. He somehow missed Rudi Voeller who was laughing as he knocked it into an empty net! Gavin looked a complete mug and we mentioned it from time to time to time... He has two recollections of the incident, ' I looked for Sparky, he gave me a complete blank, Rushy swerved it and didn't want to know, they were all passing the buck so I thought 'f*ck it' passed it back to Nev and that c*nt Voeller mugged me off'! (Which has to be the greatest single sentence multi name drop in footballing lore). His follow up story, he was in hospital after an operation having a dressing changed when the show was on telly and he told the nurse exactly 'what happened next', when she asked how he knew he told her 'cost that useless t*** doing the pass back is ME!' Peter Osgood used to have a chat, lovely man RIP, Ian Hutchinson was a nice lad too, I've met Geoff Hurst and played golf with Jack Charlton, Jack is everything I thought he would be,a fantastic character. That is all
