Case Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Right - Assume for a second that we don't sign a DM. Assume also, that we need to find a solution from within the squad we have now, until Lucas and/or Allen are fit. Those more familiar with the ressies than I might have an option... Assume also that Rodgers might want to persist with Stevie in there, in which case, we need to play a midfielder further up, in tandem with Henderson, perhaps. I vaguely recall Carra playing DM for us in the past, and I could be wrong, but has Agger played there too in an emergency? Any other unlikely DM's from the past that have played and been a success there in the short term? So, two questions ... 1) - Who could play there now, if we had to, to avoid the Stevie / Hendo failure v Villa .... and2) - What unlikely DM has played there for us in the past, and how did they do? For me, I believe that Sakho has played DM in the past for PSG, and while he doesn't like it, he could be a possible short term solution.
Case Posted January 25, 2014 Author Posted January 25, 2014 (edited) I love Momo, me. Short term contract on a low wage and I'd be all over that, but it kind of breaks the spirit of the thread. Falconhoof Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 I admire your looking to make the best of what we've got Case, but the club has resources. It must have money to spend, surely to goodness we can't let this window pass without significant investment.

schmuckdonald Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Brad Jones Has to be good at something other than hair.
Zoob Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Even though lack of action demonstrates a weird and infuriating kind of insanity, I just can't see us signing any defensive midfielder in the next week or so. There's obviously a lot more than simply tackling and passing, but Sakho is good at both, and seems to read the game well too, so could be worth a go there. Could see Agger playing there too.
Earl Hafler Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Everton and Arsenal in the next two weeks. Two in midfield, one being Gerrard, is unlikely to be sufficient. I think Flanagan could play the anchor role. He's versatile, can play right or left, covered the centre halves well from the left back position on several occasions before he was injured. Maybe an extra body in there if things aren't going to plan - put Kelly to right back and have Flanagan sweeping in front of the back four and facilitating Gerrard's role as playmaker.
SkippyjonJones Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 I reckon Kelly could do a job there...
kop205 Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Could we get Coady back? Seems to have been doing ok.
Cam Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 (edited) Play a 3-3-4 formation. ---------Skrtel--------Sakho--------------–-----------Agger----------------------Gerrard-Henderson-Allen-------Sterling-Sturridge-Suarez-Coutinho Agger playing the Sammer role would a) help creativity and b) stop people running at the centrebacks. D.Boon Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 i suspect Sakho like Carra before im would be horrific in midfield. Doubt Agger would be able to function either. No Ilori on the other hand
johngibo YPC Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Carragher started as a midfielder for us
Romario Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 (edited) There has got to be a solid defensive holding midfielder with experience that we could pick up and could do a job for us. Drop straight in, nothing fancy, just smart, hard tackling and lays it off when won to players better versed in using it which we have loads of. It's amazing we have absolutely no other options and we're a top four team. Baffling indeed.Momo Sissoko would be perfect for Tuesday. Even a Biscan of old would be a great asset to throw in the mix. Gone quiet on Nigel De Jong.
FakeNewsBear Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 I think he'll play Gerrard like a Sammer dropping picking up off defence and moving forward it won't work but that's what he will do ---------Mignolet--------- -----Skrtel-----Sakho----- Kelly------Gerrard---Flanno --------Hendo---Allen-------- Sterling----Sturridge----Suarez
RedMersey Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 When Alberto came on yesterday, he moved Hendo back to the deep role with Gerrard pushed further forward. Could work. Won't happen.
Sion Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 What have people seen in Alberto to suggest our midfield would be any more combative than if Coutinho was in there? They're both gonna cause us problems if played in front of Gerrard and Henderson. A CB is gonna have to do a job in there as far as I see it. Suggestions of Flanno are ludicrous too
