Watched the superb 'Cria Cuervos' last night and re-watched the even better 'El Espíritu de la Colmena' a week or so ago. Both films deal, to a certain degree, with Franco and the lasting effect of the Civil War.

I've read quite a bit about the Civil War itself and the whole thing is truly horrifying. But what I can't get my head around is how a murderous Fascist regime was allowed to exist for so long. I know that Spain weren't involved in the Second World War but the links to both Hitler and Mussolini were strong. Did Europe ever turn its back on Spain? It doesn't appear so.

Spain is such a diverse country with strong regional identity and what appears to be a great deal that was never really resolved after Franco had gone. With the growing popularity of Fascism across the continent, you wonder if Spain could get caught up in this again, particularly with its current economic problems.

Anyway, the Spanish Civil War, eh? What say you?
