Where is the golden generation now?

I know a decade ago we all fantasised about the mainstay of our team 10 years on. And it probably looked something like this:

Kirkland

Otsemobor-Wright-Medjani-Vignal

Partridge-Welsh-Gerrard-Warnock

Le tallec-Sinama-Pongolle

  • Kirkland is now 32, the prime age for a keeper. He plays for Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship. He got that one cap for England so he dad could cash his bet.

  • Otsemobor is 30, a great age for a defender. He is still at Merseyside, currently playing for Tranmere Rovers, on loan from Milton Keynes, in League 1. Never capped.

  • Vignal is 32, another experienced craft defender. He plays in the fourth division of French football for Beziers. He's payed for 14 different clubs in his career. Never capped.
  • Wright, aged 33 and the old boy at the back by now, plays for Wrexham in the Conference. Never capped. His highest honour was once likened to Tony Adams by John Barnes.
  • Medjani, aged 28, plays for Olympiacos and has managed no less than 24 caps for Algeria. Missed the world cup though.

  • Partridge, 33 (and thus perhaps getting a bit too old to star in our team now) went through 10 clubs before retiring two years ago. He now works at the Liverpool FC academy as a physiotherapist. Never capped.
  • Stephen Warnock, aged 32, plays for Leeds in the championship. He's been capped twice for England and in fact went to the 2010 World Cup with them.
  • John Welsh is 29 and as such the perfect age to be our midfield general and probably captain of the side. He plies his trade at Preston North End in League 1, where he was voted Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year (for the club, not the league) last season. Never capped.
  • Gerrard, 33, is the captain of LFC and England, won numerous honours and capped 108 times for England.

  • Le Tallec now 29 and thus the experienced creative fulcrum of the team by now, plays for plays for Valenciennes FC in Ligue 1. Never capped.
  • Sinama-Pongolle is also 29 and so likewise in the prime of his goalscoring career. He plays for FC Rostov in the Russian top division, after a tour of Europe's top divisions, having played in the top divisions in Spain, Portugal, France and England. He has in fact managed a cap for France, in 2008.

No we didn't.

No one thought we had a golden generation in that era.

Gerrard aside, there were high hopes for Partridge, and Welsh was the Spearing of that era, but no one was getting too excited. Not sure how you get Gerrard and the french 'gems' in the same team. Gerrard had been in our first team about 4 years by the time they arrived.

Thats a golden generation? Take Gerrard out of it and that side would struggle in division 4

gregory vignal has never played more than 30 games for any club throughout his career.

I remember his home league debut v West Ham - marked a then forum favourite Freddie Kanoute out of the game - thought he was gonna be a star...

hehe was it him that came on and got taken off in Russia? Biscan was involved somewhere.

I thought him and Riise would nail the left side for a while, f*** me.

Hadn't thought about Kirkland in a while. Given his massive fee (for his position), the fact that we didn't need him as we'd already signed a keeper that day, his made-from-balsa skeleton that rendered him unfit for almost his entire time at the club, and the fact that he was utterly, hopelessly, totally useless at actually catching or blocking footballs, I think he has to be in with a shout of being the worst signing ever at the club.

I mean Andy Carroll was horrendous, but he was, at least a player we needed, had some potential, and even showed some quality while he was here, and we recouped some cash. Kirkland, I can see no redeeming features whatsoever.

Scott Carson must also be one of the worst signings.

Yeah, but he cost less, and played a part, albeit a limited one, while he was here.

He made at least one save, which makes him a 100% improvement on Kirkland.
