Arnie Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 I wanted to share with you LFChistory.net's exclusive interview with the one and only Joey Jones. He cancelled training at Melwood for the first time in the club's history (we are led to believe) due to his then on-going brawl with Ray Kennedy and checked out of Anfield after elbowing Paisley in the face accidentally (again, we are led to believe). Interviewing him was a riot and you won't be disappointed giving yourself a few minutes to check out our talk with him and be entertained by Mad Dog Jones. It would be nice if you include your thoughts on Joey and perhaps your own memories of witnessing his antics. A passionate player if there ever was one! Cheers, Arnie editor of LFChistory.net and co-author of the Liverpool Encyclopedia
smithdown Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 (edited) good old Joey only real memory of him is him running to our end in Rome with that fist salute, but that'll do Edited November 26, 2013 by smithdown
Swan Red Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 yeah it seems I have much better recollection of that run and the flag than I do of him playing. I've seen them way more often since though so it's not surprising
dorgie Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 (edited) good old Joey only real memory of him is him running to our end in Rome with that fist salute, but that'll do Great picture that...the Roma ball boys with their LFC hats :)/> Also, hadn't realised (or had completely forgotten) that Alec Lindsay was a substitute that night. Wow, me neither I thought Lindsay had long gone by 1977. Joey Jones wasn't all that really if truth be told, a cult hero obviously but not the best left back we've had by some distance.

Murphman Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Well there's Kennedy and then there's ........ :tumbleweed:/> Gerry Byrne, Emlyn Hughes, Jamie Carragher before Rafa, Alec Lindsay in earlier years too. Glenn Johnson is miles better even though he's a right back.

Murphman Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Don't forget Stevie Nicol. Christ, how could I forget Steve Nicol! or Beglin. I didn't, he was no better than Joey.

Arnie Posted November 29, 2013 Author Posted November 29, 2013 In my books Stevie Nicol is the best we have had as left back. He was incredible where ever he played. A unique competitor. The history buff in me argues Donald Mackinlay would be up there as well, but I guess he's a just bit before our time so no use debating his qualities really (1910-29). But he was a tremendous asset to the club. I always rated Jim Beglin and I think he could have been a regular for years to come, if it had not been for that dreadful incident with Gary Stevens.
aka Dus Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 I think Beglin was very good and that his awfulness as a pundit has done his memory no little harm.
John am Rhein Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Nicol > Beglin > Jones by all accounts Gerry Byrne was one of the best ever
