Building own house

Anyone here bought land and designed and built their own house?

 

I've seen it a lot in Norway with some pretty spectacular results but it seems less common in the UK.

 

What's the score with the land, planning permission, utilities ect? There are a couple of firms about who do an end to end service but would like to find out more about it.
