Couldn't find another active Kenny thread and thought this was worth posting.

Dalglish denies failure as Liverpool boss

September 20, 2013

Kenny Dalglish believes he over-achieved in his final season as Liverpool manager, suggesting he deserved more credit for guiding the team to two Cup finals at Wembley.

Liverpool won the Carling Cup before losing narrowly to Chelsea in the FA Cup Final in a thrilling end to the 2011/12 campaign, but it was not enough to save the Anfield legend from losing his job

Now Dalglish has claimed the current Liverpool side would welcome a similar outcome to this current season under manager Brendan Rodgers, even though he admits the club need to secure a return to the Champions League sooner rather than later.

"What those boys achieved in 2012 was fantastic. To win the Carling Cup and to get to an FA Cup final was beyond any expectations," Dalglish told the Daily Mirror. "Liverpool is a massive football club and they had not won anything for six years when I got there, but we won something in our first season.

"People will turn around and say we finished eighth in the league, but how many points would you swap for three Wembley trips? That League Cup was a trophy for Liverpool Football Club. I don’t see that as anything but a positive. It's always pleasant to get a winner's medal.

"It might be more rewarding to qualify in Europe after finishing fourth, but who remembers that game when you finished fourth to get there? Winning a Cup final against Cardiff at Wembley and walking away with the Carling Cup was a day to remember.

"Yes, I would have loved to have finished fourth and I would have loved to have won the Champions League and won the Premier League, but it was never going to be achieved overnight."

Even though Dalglish admitted he was hurt by his sacking by the club's current owners, he has confirmed he would return to the club if asked to fulfil an ambassadorial role in the future.

"I've always said that I'm happy to help Liverpool Football Club in whatever way I can and that hasn't changed in any way, shape or form," he added.

He's right about everything except "how many points would you swap?" I'd happily have taken 4th place and gone out in the cups in the 3rd rounds.

That's fair enough, but that's your choice rather than a representation of achievement by a team. IIRC the 2012 team won something like 10 out of 12 cup games that season. 10 out of 12 football matches. The true story of that season can't be seen clearly because of the league/cup performance dichotomy. The nearest you get to a fair judgement is to treat all as one and then judge whether the total theoretical 'points' represent an achievement or not.

Looked at as a whole work, that season was not a great one, but it wasn't terrible either. It was a season of massive extremes. It was certainly enough IMO to have earned the manager another go. More proof in the pudding was that in his 6 months without cups, Kenny was an achiever in the league.

We've done this to death, though, haven't we ? Does someone want to start a new thread about Rafa's last season ? That'll work well.

There is a current Rafa thread open.

It's Kenny himself who has brought the issue up - are we supposed to ignore it?

I think its the money wasted buying mediocre players for massive fees with massive wages that ultimately lost Kenny and Comolli their jobs, rather than failure to finish fourth.

Regardless, it is inexcusable that Kenny is willing to take on some ambassadorial role at the club and the owner are not jumping at it.

Maybe they are. Seems very likely they have at least discussed it.

The mistake Kenny made was buying Andy Carroll, Stewart Downing, Seb Coates and Charlie Adam for the hefty sum of 70mill. I think the long absence as amanager fro the agme may have effecyed his judgement on these players. On the other hand we all know he tried his utmost. Given more time he could perhaps have turned around but we all know that he was going to go for the likes of Diame which may have sent us into a spiral downfall had he remained. So perhaps the owners intervention to sack him is a blessing in disguise and we can all fondly remmmeber Kenny as the legend he is.

Rodgers main coup so far apart fom his tactics etc is buying Sturrridge and Coutinho for the price of Downing

The thought of Kenny Dalglish feeling that he has to 'defend his record' makes me sad.

Well he was sacked so he has that right.

I didn't want to see Kenny leave when he did. I think with two finals he deserved another crack, but I'd argue the owners did the right thing.

Also I wouldn't swap ANY cup for a top four finish. You don't tell your kids about top four finishes, you don't even tell them about the times Liverpool finished second. I'd win another 5 Cups before Liverpool finished in the top four and I'd be happy about it.

what's the point of finishing 4th, having one season in the CL and then not qualifying again?

it's like getting sober when you're only going to get drunk again

I can't get on board with the position that a horrendous run of results in the league is completely negated and should be forgotten because of success in cups. Let's not forget it was Shankly who rightly pointed out that the league was 'our bread and butter'.

Kenny will always be a legend as a Liverpool player and manager, both for the success he achieved in his first time here and for the dignity, strength and humanity he showed after Hillsborough. In his second stint as manager he came in and helped us in a very difficult time for the club. He got some things very right and some things wrong. He may have been away from management for too long. The signings were more miss than hit and the tactics were not always spot on either. He may have turned it around given time, but the owners decided to follow their original plan and bring in their own man.

i don't suppose that's the aim. the tenor on here was much different during the summer when we were losing out on players. or not acting swiftly enough to get them, because this season was a real opportunity to push the gap on the top 4 apparently.

I reckon there's a belter of a Kean/Barry/Alonso thread to be had.

Who is really saying that though ? If anyone wants to say we had a brilliant season in 2011/12, then I'd take massive issue with that because we didn't get nearly enough points. Conversely, if anyone wants to right it off as a disaster worthy of a sacking I think they're equally wrong, because 2 great cup runs, one won, one v close, a very enjoyable and memorable season make.

Neither acted alone, but it's about winning football matches really

Surprised at Kenny stating 3 Wembley trips. Doesn't need to and its b******s.

I'd agree with you ... if you weren't completely wrong.

We went to 2 finals.

That'll be why he didn't say "three finals", he said "three Wembley trips".

Can't see what the problem is - he was right.
