anfield11 Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Football should adopt the ice hockey method. Assists to the two previous touches. A midfielder can split a defence open with a great pass. The recipient makes an easy pass over to the scorer for a tap in and he gets the assist, while the player who really created it gets nothing.
Maldini Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Maybe we could use this thread to count assists and contributions to goals. Contributions being passes, runs or whatever that the goal couldn't have happened without.

Penalty save was as much responsible for two of the three points - would be interested to see key contributions like that at the end of the season too.
Ombudsam Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Nerds aye. get a job in football if you really want to go into that level of detail
Cunny Posted August 19, 2013 Author Posted August 19, 2013 Penalty save was as much responsible for two of the three points - would be interested to see key contributions like that at the end of the season too. agree but this (for me anyway) was meant to be some blunt measure of creativity
David Hodgson Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 aye. get a job in football if you really want to go into that level of detail Ha ! No f***** on here has ANY right playing the 'nerd' card at anyone else. The whole act of even being on this forum is nerdy and shameful. Think about it, and then deal with it. (nerdy smiley face)

honourablegeorge Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 aye. get a job in football if you really want to go into that level of detail I don't. I want someone else to go into the detail, and I can have a quick skim through the results at the end of the year and use them to make massive sweeping generalisatons.
Cheesecake Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 agree with Maldini and HG, let's do this properly from the outset and have a Morse style season long thread running in here!Cunny gets the joyous task of keeping the stats up to date for the next 10 months!
Rory Fitzgerald Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 Sturridge scored the goal today but what was more significant, Enrique passing it or Coutinho not touching it ? Anyway, Cunny can decide
Maldini Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 (edited) I think you have to give Enrique the assist but Coutinho a "contribution" for want of a better word. Even though Coutinho's non-touch was probably more important. Edited August 24, 2013 by Maldini
Cunny Posted August 25, 2013 Author Posted August 25, 2013 Aston Villa 0 Liverpool 1Sturridge (Enrique, Coutinho) Aspas 1Enrique 1Coutinho 1
goodrobotusses Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 (edited) For some reason I've had it stuck in my head that it was Rex who stepped over the ball. Still, and this is unrelated to this thread, crediting a square ball and a dummy as an assist before a great individual goal is a nice way of highlighting how arbitrary the use of assists to highlight how good a player is/isn't can be. Swan Red Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Aston Villa 0 Liverpool 1Sturridge (Enrique, Coutinho) Aspas 1Enrique 1Coutinho 1 In case I've missed it what criteria gives you two credited with the assist
Earl Hafler Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Aston Villa 0 Liverpool 1Sturridge (Enrique, Coutinho) Aspas 1Enrique 1Coutinho 1 I'd say that goal was Sturridge's and Enrique and Coutinho played key parts in it. Sturridge took a few touches and went past two players so a straight assist seems....wrong.
schmuckdonald Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Enrique doesn't deserve an assist for that.
Ombudsam Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Enrique doesn't deserve an assist for that. it couldn't have been more of an assist. He passed it to a guy who then scored
David Hodgson Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 it couldn't have been more of an assist. He passed it to a guy who then scored That's Enrique's assist. Pure and simple. Can't have double assists. The assist stat needs to be as close to a non subjective factual event as a goal itself is. The only way to get that is to call an assist 'the last touch by a team mate prior to the goalscorers touches'. You've then got to accept that we're not rating quality of assist , just quantity. As with goal scoring stats.

Earl Hafler Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 it couldn't have been more of an assist. He passed it to a guy who then scored Maybe give Hector Enrique the assist for the Maradona goal in 1986. They were in their own half, and Maradona took it past twelvety players, but he did pass it to the guy who scored.

Cunny Posted August 26, 2013 Author Posted August 26, 2013 Well I tried to take on what people have said and gave Coutinho an assist as well. However, you can't please all of the people all of the time. It is subjective.I've decided to go back with Rob's 'scientific' definition.
McBain Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 If you use the official fantasy prem football thingamajig they list all assists as you get points for them. Could just go by that ?
