I notice that Raymond Verhiejen (twitter) is tweeting about Juventus (allegedly) using EPO in the run up to the European Cup final in 1996.

About to watch the documentary on Dutch TV which will prove Juventus players have used EPO during 1996 Champions League final vs Ajax.

Incredible to see the documents which 100% prove the use of doping by Juventus players in preparation of 1996 CL final. Simply incredible.

These documents show 100% prove that many Juventus players had a Hemoglobin increase of 15 during April-May 1996. Impossible without doping.

I think he is referring to this video My link. I saw one quote that said something along the lines of "the left back was unplayable which, given that it was the end of a long season, was puzzling".

Given that cycling was not the only sport to see increased performances due to EPO usage in the late 90's and beyond, which teams (in retrospect) do you think could be likely candidates to have taken this path?

Probably the ones doing well in the late 90s.

Think some people who've been openly (and rightly) critical of the doping culture in cycling are going to be pretty surprised where else it's been going on. Any sport that's popular in Spain, Italy or the USA is ripe for it. Rugby as well.

It seems Capello thought we were at it 10 years ago (from the Guardian).

A member of the medical staff at a Premiership club backed D'Hooghe's claims. 'There's this attitude in English football that "nobody here is taking anything", but that's unlikely to be true. Drugs like stenazolol, which makes people strong, and clenbuterol, which grows lean muscle, are already taken. I would be amazed if EPO, which is undetectable, wasn't being used.'

The controversy was ignited earlier this month when Fabio Capello, coach of Italian champions Roma, claimed English clubs' current domination of European football was because their players were taking performance-enhancing drugs. 'It's not a question of technique or tactics. There's something else,' Capello said after Liverpool knocked his side out of the Champions League.

The Corriere dello Sport newspaper responded by publishing an article headlined 'Europe: doping suspected' and illustrated it with photographs of two Liverpool players, including captions which asked readers to 'note the powerful physique of the England players'. It pointed out that Italian football drug tests far more players - 5,000 every season - than either England or Spain.

We only had two England players - Gerrard and Carragher. Carragher is hardly the 'powerful physique' type, and Gerrard is a freak of nature.

We also had Luis Garcia on the pitch, so not sure what he's complaining about.

We had Heskey and Murphy as well, and Garcia didn't arrive until 2 years later.

Think you're getting mixed up with us beating his Juventus side at Anfield.

Either way, Capello's comments there just sound like the bleating of someone who knows his own side have been at it for years and now can't fathom how anybody could beat them fair and square.

There was one summer (not sure if it was 95 or 96) in which the Italian media had reported that Del Piero had gained 4kg in muscle bulk. In the same team the likes of Ravanelli, Vialli, Di Livio were all physically very strong too. The Juventus doctor had once been found guilty of administering illegal drugs to the Juve players but then the sentence was overturned and lost in technicalities.

Capello was basically talking about Heskey, who was gargantuan in that 2-0 at Anfield.

To be fair I also often thought he played like he was on drugs, albeit a different sort.

I didn't realise that Guardiola had served a 4-month ban as a player. I also read the other day that he was taking his own medical team to Bayern to help with player recovery.

I wonder if his Barça team are under suspicion at all?

Not our Kolo that's for bloomin' sure.

Teams do occasionally look very big very quickly. GH's team, except Murphy, all became massive & muscular almost overnight but I put a lot of that down to confidence & how they carried themselves.

That was overturned, it was around the time loads were testing positive for Nandrolone only to have them overturned later.

Always had my suspicions about milan the last few years. maldini costacurta and inzaghi all played for them until they were aroud 40. They also had serginho seedorf ambrosini cafu nesta and theres probably more who played until their late thirties. just seems a bit strange to me. could just be excellent fitness levels but i have my doubts

Yeah, think this has been mooted before but is a decent point.

Would hate to think it of someone like Maldini though.

I may have posted this before but my wife's mate worked as a chamber maid at The Burnham Beeches Hotel, the England team would stay there whenever they were at the old Wembley. She was cleaning a room after the players had left and found a package, when she checked it out it was a steroid. I asked her which player but she could only tell me it was the big blonde fella, she thought he may be a goalkeeper.

Go figure, that was a long time ago too.

Didn't think to make her point him out on the telly when the game was on?

Sorry - this was pre-War & tellies wasn't it?

Who does she think she is, going through people's rubbish and having it 'checked out'?

She manages to perform a forensic analysis on this package but is unable to find out who's staying in the room?

I'll be kind and say that she's having you on old bean.
