Conrad Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 (edited) http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/22631540 RIP Yes, RIP good player - remember him playing for England against Italy. Edited May 23, 2013 by Heighway 61 Revisited
dorgie Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Remember him well, a Manc, but RIP all the same. Someone on Twitter referred to him falling out with the brother Jimmy. Never heard that before.
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Aye - I'd heard that too. He was ok, his brother less-so, his brother's kid - total c***
Murphman Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Aye - I'd heard that too. He was ok, his brother less-so, his brother's kid - total c*** But a FAR better player than Brian, he won the cup for the mancs in 1977, him and Buchan were outstanding players. Broke my f*cking heart, we'd have won the treble etc.....
Conrad Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 But a FAR better player than Brian, he won the cup for the mancs in 1977, him and Buchan were outstanding players. Really? Brian was the one that played a fair few times for England.
Murphman Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Really? Brian was the one that played a fair few times for England. He had Mariner, Francis, Keegan, Channon, Johnson and Pearson to compete with, for a couple of seasons I actually wished he played for us.
Koogan Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Brian Greenhoff played for my local team here in Finland towards the end of his career in the summer of 1983.

The replay date they were proposing was almost mid summer and caused Bob to mess with his selection for the game. RIP Brian Edited May 24, 2013 by AE
Murphman Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 FA ****ed us over in 77 (how things change!!!) The replay date they were proposing was almost mid summer and caused Bob to mess with his selection for the game. RIP Brian We f*cking raped them that day and lost thanks to the flukiest goal you're ever likely to see. The only highlights for me (as well as getting beat I was full of flu) were Jimmy Case's fabulous goal and 'He's up Mrs Brown' being roared from the rafters, Docherty was absolutely flinching in the dugout, almost as much as Laurie Brown.
Cobs Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 FA ****ed us over in 77 (how things change!!!) The replay date they were proposing was almost mid summer and caused Bob to mess with his selection for the game. How was that then? Bob would have played for a draw otherwise?
fred milne Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 How was that then? Bob would have played for a draw otherwise? He would have only played with 2 forwards rather than 3.
AE Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 (edited) He would have only played with 2 forwards rather than 3. Probably.I can remember reading quotes about him regretting his team selection. I have been googling and can't see them, but Paul Tomkins talks about it on LFCHistory.nethttp://www.lfchistory.net/Articles/Article/2837-3 The Liverpool manager regretted his selection at Wembley, opting to leave out Ian Callaghan and play three forwards. His thinking was affected by a strange decision by the FA. Should the game go to a replay, it would be held in late June — a quite ludicrous date. After an especially long and hard season, that was the last thing his players needed, and he tried to win the game outright on the Saturday. But again he saw a benefit to his selection: Callaghan, at 35, might not have been fresh for the game four days later. Although Callaghan was approaching retirement, it shows an awareness of the limits that playing games in quick succession place on a player. In previous seasons, Bill Shankly had rested an entire team ahead of cup finals. Getting it wrong at Wembley allowed Paisley the chance to get it right in Rome Of course if we had won that with a different team would it have affected Rome? Who knows, and given the choice I know which one I would rather have Sorry Brian for hijacking your thread. Edited May 24, 2013 by AE
dorgie Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 We f*cking raped them that day and lost thanks to the flukiest goal you're ever likely to see. The first goal was littered with errors too. Keegan gave the ball away and Hughes fell over himself. Was a good finish by Pearson, mind. Sorry also for hijacking your thread Brian.

Murphman Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 (edited) He doesn't mind. He's dead. If he was here now he'd put his hands up anyways, a decent sort was Brian. That bit about Cally was fair enough actually, saved his legs, it was amazing how he got better and better as he got older, he really was a fantastic player, I don't think a lot of people realise quite how good he was, he was better than Scholes and everybody raves about him. Kahnee Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 We f*cking raped them that day f*** me Murph, can we not? There are plenty of words to use, lets try and leave that one in the drawer for when it's actually needed. Unless you want to be labelled the new Pardew...
New York Red Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 I thought the pair of them were good. Jimmy in particular when he was with Stoke had a cracking run. He really looked like our kind of player. He was a bit wasted with the Scum. RIP Brian though. I find it hard to dislike some of those old Mancs when they were from the era of not being able to hold a candle to us (and those horrible, rough Admiral shirts and number tags on their socks).
New York Red Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 lou macari? A c*nt to end all c*nts Fair point. Gordon Hill had a face you could punch also.

Leeds had the number tags on their socks. Not sure the Mancs had ?
