amazing to think that he was intended to be the star of the show when it was first broadcast but Henry Winkler's Fonz character proved much more popular and he was reduced to a minor part

I finally watched this last night - excellent program

 

He WAS very good, but I think they were overstating quite how good he was. Played some outstanding games, but he's far from unique in that. He didn't do much in the European Cup final for Real Madrid when we beat them in Paris, but maybe he'd already been hit by injuries at that point.

 

He'd probably thrive more in modern football where the advantage is sadly tilted much more in favour of the ball players due to stricter refereeing, etc., but then so would various others.
