how the f*** is it unfair when it's the same for everyone?

The blert

I think his point is that you are playing teams with different/stronger squads than when other teams played them. He has a point.

By this logic, it means you can't sign anyone once the season starts either. Spurs and City were at an advantage in 2004/5 as we hadn't signed Alonso and Garcia, Bolton had a disadvantage.

Its daft.

That seems the logical conclusion. I see his point I don't say I agree with it but I see it. He's reducing the season to a battle between squads and managers rather than owners and transfers and there's a discussion to be had considering that we now have transfer windows. Like what's the theory behibnd restricting when clubs can sign players?

I have no idea why they came up with the transfer window.

I don't think this is right at all, but, that's just me.

which is fair enough but if the transfer window was an attempt to level the playing field then restricting transfers during the season makes some sense

I actually agree with his point, its not a level playing field as the squads are changing up to end of August and after January. I'd like to see the summer transfer window shut the night before the league starts and something akin to what Wegner is suggesting there, allowed to replace two players in the squad in January.

But then I also think if you get sent off against a certain team you miss the next match against that team. I'm a maverick.

there is a point somewhere. teams all have a good spells and bad spells. if you're lucky enough to face teams during their bad spells you're in with a chance of getting 3 points, if you play them all during their good spells the season got a lot harder. with such close finished in the premiership the luck of the fixture list could determine who finishes top. of course it's likely to even itself out over a season, unlike refereeing decisions...

What if there are 3 horrific injuries to one position, like goalie

would there be special dispensation to make signings?

There is that at the minute. Emergancy loan, but only for a keeper I think. Which is fair enough.

The problem is that all clubs are not equal so this restriction for Wenger will be advantageous whereas someone like Newcastle it is disadvantageous. If Newcastle have to add buy out clauses in contracts to attract top talent then they will be vulnerable to losing their best players in January. Why should they be punished twice?

In my opinion the transfer window should shut at the start of the season, not 2 weeks into it, we should have a 2 week winter break when transfers can be made, then it is shut again once the games start again. Therefore every team plays 19 games against the same squads of players. Obviously this has fixture congestion problems but you cannot cap transfers just because some clubs utilise it more than others.

A very poor rule if you ask me.

as for sending off rule, thats worse.

The window hasn't worked. This plus Bosman has made things worse. The gaming of transfers by agents is an insidious mess.

There should probably only be a window from, say, March to May where you can't sign players. Rest of the year, you can.

I was out having lunch yesterday and the blokes next to me were talking football - one has a box at the emirates and the other a spurs fan.

The Arsenal fan was talking of boardroom bustups going back to when Arsenal were beaten 3-1 by Barcelona and AW told the board three years hence they would be beating Barcelona 3-1. 3 years came and went but one board member did pointedly ask AW "if we were no better than Barcelona?"

Despite this, my evesdropping over sushi informed me that "Wenger has £200million to spend".

He's got millions to spend. A fortune. I would say its closer to 70/80 million though.

I wonder whether he has some sort of thought process that if FFP is fully exercised, he will spend big then, as they will be in the position to be one of the very few to have cash reserves to buy whoever he wants

And usually you've played each other once by the time the window opens. We've played 4 teams twice ?

It's hardly unfair.

I think a little overlap is fine.

There should also be no restriction on the amount of players signed. A club could suffer several injuries to key players and only sign two new players ? Not logical or reasonable.

i agree with him really. has he signed anyone in january before? not sure why he's choosing the twentieth winter window to air the complaint though, other than frustration.

He signed Arshavin in the February transfer window.

I agree with Wenger here actually, although we have often been the beneficiaries of winter transfers.

As a matter of principle, It would be more fair and sporting if all teams entering a competition had to compete with the same team for the full duration of the tournament.

*If* there was to be a re-working of the transfer window it should go alongside a revamp of the fixture list.

For example:

1) The transfer window closes before the season starts. No more unsettling players as they start the season.

2) The fixture list is redone in the same way as Spain etc (and how Rafa suggested in his 'facts'). You play everyone in the first half of the season. Then reverse it in the second.

3) You introduce a winter break at the halfway point.

4) This winter break is also the winter transfer window. It closes just before the 2nd half of fixtures start.

This way everyone plays with the same squad of players against each team at least once.
