Hypothetical question on downloading

Say someone was trying to download a torrent for the first time but didn't have a clue what they were doing. This person had installed bittorrent and found a torrent to download but was getting a d/l speed of 10kb/sec(!). What would that person need to do to fix it?

 

Edit: He's found the beginner's guide and is going to try that.
