He's been one of our better players in the EL, assuming we are still in it in Jan, that is worth something. Getting rid at all costs just so we can wring out hands and revel in what a bad signing he's been is not good enough.

 

He's a good squad player and given our lack of a squad as it is, he will need replacing. Fair enough if we get a chunk of money back and buy someone better, but that didn't work with Carroll did it.

Boro aren't real rivals though, classed as a small town in Yorkshire. Downing was also loaned to Sunderland as a youth player.

I think that's what it'll come down to and if Newcastle aren't interested the player may decide west ham's good enough if he's getting games and some goals

However, despite getting the winner in the Europa League home clash with Anzhi, Downing has remained on the periphery of Rodgers' squad.

 

Liverpool are resigned to suffering a sizeable loss on the former Middlesbrough man but will hope to get back around half of what they paid Villa for his services.

 

If a suitable offer is received then Rodgers will put that cash towards signing the ‘two or three’ attacking players he wants to boost his firepower in January.
