So as Stevie hits 600 has he done enough to be number 1? For me he has but what do you think?

he has done enough

and yet he hasn't, due to the awesomeness of King Kenny

so in conclusion, it's one o' dem

No 1 what?

If it's appearances then it's Cally, no?

If it's footballing genius, then it's Kenny by miles. Stevie is near the top of the next group.

Cant comment on the comparison because I haven't seen Kenny.

But I will comment on Gerrard. I think Gerrard is best all-round player that has played in England in his generation. At different stages of his career he has;

- Played CM and put in (hard) tackles combined with an ability to hit defence splitting passes,

- Played RM with the athleticism and skill to go past a man and whip in great crosses,

- Played AM behind Torres (and Crouch at times) and combined an ability to be a provider and burst into the box and score goals,

- Played RB in his early days and also as an auxillery in-game replacement in 2 of the most important finals being the UEFA Cup Final and Champions League Final,

- Been a leader for the past 8 years when he received the captaincy from Sami Hyppia with new players continually praising him for his willingness to try integrate them into the dressing room.

According to;

"Is he the best in the world? He might not get the attention of [Lionel] Messi and Ronaldo but, yes, I think he just might be," Zidane said. "If you don't have a player like Steven Gerrard, who is the engine room, it can affect the whole team.

"When we were winning league titles and European Cups at Real, I always said Claude Makelele was our most important player. There is no way myself, [Luis] Figo or Raúl would have been able to do what we did without Claude and the same goes for Liverpool and Gerrard.

"He has great passing ability, can tackle and scores goals, but most importantly he gives the players around him confidence and belief. You can't learn that – players like him are just born with that presence."

Stevie's not finished yet so it's hardly a comparison you can make, plus he's been disadvantaged having to carry the team his entire career almost. In those circumstances it may never be possible to compare their contribution's.

I've seen plenty of both, but you'd need some fancy algorithym to come close to getting an accurate comparison really. In short it's still Kenny , we won stuff, loads of stuff, and he was on a different planet to everyone else he played with or against. Stevie's incredible, a one-off in many ways, and definitely in our top 6 from my lifetime, with Barnes, Rush,Hansen and Souness. If I was forced to pick a spot for SG now, it'd be 2 or 3, depends how much weight you give to length of service etc.

Hate doing this though, there's plenty of players that deserve mentions and are equally deserving of being in a top whatever you want to call it. Would love to have seen Gerrard play with the great teams of the past.

He's a great player but I would have Kenny and Souness above him, at least. Emlyn Hughes was another in the same mould as Gerrard and for their positions there are also Rush and Hansen to consider.

Kenny is the best we've had, Steven Gerrard isn't far behind. Both are right up there with the best I've ever seen.

He won't be fully appreciated til he has retired sadly.

Different players, in very different sides, in different times - how do you begin to compare? Dalglish was gifted but had the benefit of gifted players around him. Gerrard has not always had the same luxury. Both were pivotal to the success of the club in their respective era's. If I had to commit to one or the other it would have to be Dalglish no disrespect to Gerrard.

i reckon stevie g might be a decent manager.

Nah. His Joe Cole shout means he can't

Stevie's only making the bench for my greatest Liverpool team.

Who on earth is in your midfield?

Kennedy (Mark)

Biscan

Poulsen

Carter..

Igor captain of course..

its a tough one ,Kenny was a better forward, Souness a better midfielder , but id say gerrard is probably the better footballer because of his versatility played in almost every outfield position and been a great player in them all

I rather Kenny but I also rather John Barnes and Ian Rush.

There was something giddy going on about Barnesy back in the day. Some primordial magic of looking at a player single handily winning games and just being so above his piers it was incredible and he wore a red shirt.

Just a whole load of "get a load of this.."

Rushie is my childhood hero.

So I'm biased there.

Gerrard is significantly better than Souness. Souness was Roy Keane level good. Gerrard is better than both. Liverpool bought Souness at age 25/26. He'd not pulled up any trees before then, and was only just getting in the Scotland squad. Gerrard was already being talked about as Europe's best midfielder by the time he was 25/26.

Between Kenny and Gerrard there is barely any daylight, but Kenny shades it for me.

John Barnes was phenomenal, but only for about 3 and a half years. After that he was really good, but never at the heights he hit. Rushie was a superb striker but he needed the team around him functioning well. He didn't own a game the way Kenny, Gerrard or Barnes would.

I know what your saying and the logic side of it works out and all but when I was a kid playing football these were the players of Liverpool I wanted to be or watched to learn things.

Purely a personal choice over-riding the right choice.

It's all subjective to the era they played in. If you spoke to some right auld fellas they would throw into the mix Billy Liddell as up there too, carried us fir years just like Gerrard.

I would still say Dalglish tho cos he has and always will be my hero, but then again that's my era.

When threads like this appear I like the thoughts they evoke.

What would Shanks have thought of Gerrard?? Would definitely been his type of player.

I have to say I find it hard to accept that Kenny, as the awesomest player from a series of awesome teams, whose legend was further enhanced after he hung up his boots, and rightly so of course, should pip Gerrard in the purely playing stakes. I reckon in a few years the entirety of Gerrard's career will be seen for the amazeballs one-off it was (those goals!) and the people who are nowadays picking Kenny having seen both him and Gerrard will just be like those old fellows who had seen Liddell and then Dalglish and would still pick Liddell. Not wrong, but just ... old ;)

Obviously I've never seen any of these players live so I cheerfully admit that my opinion on the matter isn't worth a damn. Gerrard for me, though.
